Book Description

A one-night stand with a werewolf has unexpected consequences in Theresa Meyers's latest romance in the Sons of Midnight series.

After he is exiled from his pack, Tyee Grayson must learn to make it on his own. But one night with a beautiful stranger who has luminous blue eyes changes everything…. Especially when his instincts shout that she is the one.

All elementary school teacher Jessica Brierly wanted was a night on the wild side, but when she finds herself pregnant, all the rules change. Not only does her lover have more secrets than she ever imagined, but suddenly they're both fighting off vampires.

When vampires attack the town she dearly loves, Ty must work with his old pack to save them from a ruthless enemy who could kill not only his mate and his unborn child—but the entire human race.

Let's Interview!

SKY:  What inspired you to write this book?

THERESA:  Sometimes a character will inspire me, and sometimes a place. In One Night with the Shifter it was a little bit of both. To be honest, what started it was the hero. I felt so bad for Tyee Grayson as the beta werewolf of the Wenatchee Were pack getting kicked out of his position in the pack as the next alpha at the end of The Half-Blood Vampire that he practically screamed in my head for his own story.  I wanted to tell what happened after he had to start over, creating a new pack of his own. The second inspiration came from my own small home town of Port Orchard, WA. There’s this bar in town, the Bethel Tavern. I’ve been to it twice with friends who grew up around here. It’s not a place you go to alone and certainly not if you aren’t ready for something a little rough around the edges. I tried to describe it faithfully as the bar where they get into the bar fight with the vampires. The house the heroine and her brothers live in is known around here as the Cedar Cove Inn, and you can look online for pictures of it. It’s a fantastic little bed and breakfast.

SKY:  How did you come up with the title?

THERESA:  LOL. You know it wasn’t supposed to be the title. I always tend to come up with titles first and that’s what the story is in my head even if the title changes. Originally I had named it Her Big, Bad Wolf, because it was my first book in the Sons of Midnight mini-series featuring a werewolf hero rather than a vampire, but my editor asked me for alternatives and at about the third round of suggestions she decided she liked One Night with the Shifter.

SKY:  Are you currently working on another story? If so, we’d love some details.

THERESA:  I’m always working on more than one project. Right now I’m finishing a vampire novella that will be part of an anthology with several other vampire authors that’s due out this spring. I’m also working on crafting a new paranormal mini-series for Harlequin Nocturne as well as writing on my next Shadow Sisters book, Shadow Hunter set in the dark fae world I write for Entangled. Later this year I’ll be writing on a New Adult book and a YA book. So there’s plenty of projects in the works.

SKY:  What sort of personality does your hero have?

THERESA:  Tyee Grayson is a lone wolf—literally. He’s left his pack because he can’t get along with the new alpha werewolf.  He’s trying to start over, keeping his paranormal side undercover as he teaches an outdoor survival skills school to members of the military. Underneath it all Ty wants to belong and have a family. He misses his pack, but he’s too proud to go back or ask for help until something matters more to him than his own ego. He’s protective, fierce and loyal, just like you’d expect from wolves that mate for life. I always create a soundtrack to each book I write that I play while I’m writing.  Ty’s song was “All-American Nightmare” by Hinder and my favorite lines out of the song were “nice guys are last, ‘cause I’m always first. I’m a freak show sucker for how it feels, turn the girl next door into hell on heels.” I thought it captured his bad boy persona just right.

SKY:  What sort of personality does your heroine have?

THERESA:  Ahhh, Jessica Brierly. She’s your all-American small-town girl with too many brothers who all think they know what’s good for her even though she’s an adult. As an elementary teacher, she knows all too well that her behavior matters, but after a lifetime in the same small town where everyone knows everyone, she wants a fling with someone that’s totally unrelated to life in Sinclair. Part of that has to do with growing up with her brothers in charge and as the only girl in the family. Jess isn’t rash, but she is independent and doesn’t always see things the way her brothers do. She’s fiercely loyal, in fact you could say in some ways that’s her biggest fault. One of the most things about writing Jess was taking the fear that’s so natural when you find out your pregnant for the first time and wondering if you are doing everything right, and compounding it by having her realize there was no rule book for being pregnant with a were for a mate. All those insecurities are amped up but at the same time are exactly what make her so perfect to be Ty’s alpha female. Jess would do anything to put her family first—just like him. She was also fun to write because all my life I’ve been surrounded by teachers, and I’ve had the opportunity to be a substitute teacher myself for a number of years, so I understand what she’s thinking as a teacher.

SKY:  Tell us about your favorite writing environment. Is it indoors, outdoors, a special room, etc.

THERESA:  I don’t always get the luxury of choosing where I write. I write anywhere I can, whenever I can: in the car in a cheap spiral notebook in the car while waiting for my teens to get out of practice, on the desktop computer in my turret office, and even sometimes I’ll text stuff on my phone to my email just so I capture it. If I do get to pick, I like to be in my office, or curled up on the couch in my living room with the sunshine spilling over my shoulder.

SKY:  What sources do you use for research?

THERESA:  I use the Internet a lot, but also my research librarian at my local library and the host of books in my office that range on topics from everything to herbal remedies and Feng Shui to art history books and Greek mythology. When you are writing paranormal romance, you draw from a number of sources to make what you are creating as authentic as possible and grounded in something real whether it’s history, herbology, or ancient societies.

SKY:  How long have you been writing? How long have you been published?

THERESA:  That’s kind of a trick question when it comes to me. I started having my writing published nationally when I was 17 and got a short story piece published in Merlin’s Pen as part of an extra credit English assignment in high school. I wrote for newspapers for years and magazines, but in fiction I’ve been writing far, far longer than I’ve been published. I started writing my first romance novel when I was seventeen as a self-created elective my senior year along with a few friends. As long as we produced written pages and showed progress in our chosen writing projects, we were given an A for the class. My first novel was published by Harlequin in 2009 and since then I’ve been thrilled to have several more. One Night with the Shifter will be my sixteenth published book, but probably the twentieth I’ve written.

SKY:  Do you prefer to write short stories, novellas or novels? Why?

THERESA:  You know, that’s a really good question. For me I prefer writing full-length novels. A novella takes just as much planning for me as a novel because it’s a full story just in a very short package. That means I don’t have time to do as many layers in the story because I have to keep everything tight and condense to the storyline of the two main characters.

SKY:  Do you write books in series? If so, share a bit about the series you currently have published or are coming soon.

THERESA:  Yes, I write several series! Thanks for asking. When writing my brain tends to come up with entire complex worlds filled with lots of different characters who all deserve a story of their own. One Night with the Shifter is part of my Sons of Midnight series featuring vampires and werewolves in the Seattle area. My Legend Chronicles are paranormal steampunk romances that are best described as what would happen if you took the television series Supernatural and mashed it together with the movie Wild Wild West (even though I started writing my three brothers named after guns who are supernatural hunters YEARS before there ever was a Supernatural television show.) I also have a contemporary romance series I’m working on that will start with The Geek Billionaire Makeover that comes out in April from Entangled and I’m working on a new paranormal world that hopefully will debut in the next year. I also am writing on the Shadow Sisters series for Entangled which features the four O’Connell sisters who can see dark fae and get caught up in their plans to retake our world that started with the novella Shadowlander. Readers can always find what I’m working on next by following me on Twitter @Theresa_Meyers liking my Facebook page at
www.facebook.com/TheresaMeyersAuthor or my going to my website www.theresameyers.com

Thanks so much for having me visit today, it’s been a lot of fun talking with you!

SKY:  My pleasure, Theresa. Great interview!

Excerpt

The air was clean and cold outside. Ty’s head cleared, his senses grew sharper. The cool evening breeze, heavy with the salty scent of nearby Puget Sound, ruffled Jess’s hair, sticking honey-colored wisps to her full, rosy lips.

“You okay?” he asked as he gently tucked the strands back behind her ear.

Jess blinked, and stared up at him, a mixture of curiosity and disbelief in her eyes. “What just happened in there?”

He tried to give her a lopsided grin, but it turned into a wince when he found his jaw was tender from the hits the vampire had landed. He rubbed the soreness. The night air chilled the dribble of blood from the cut on his cheek, making it wet and cold, but there was no scent of vampire. The third one must have been smart enough to ditch his buddies. His body ached from the fight, but it would heal fast enough. “A bar fight with strangers.”

“You didn’t know those guys?” she asked, looking around her nervously. “They seemed pretty intent on messing with you.” She grazed the corner of his mouth with her fingertips. “You’re hurt.”

The light touch was enough to send a powerful surge of awareness pounding through him that wiped away any of the ache that remained. Damn. There was no doubt in his mind there was a strong Mesmer forming with this woman.

He gently moved her fingers away from his mouth, keeping them folded in his. Her hands were fine boned and slender and feminine. “No big deal.”

Her full lips tipped up into a soft smile, making him crave to kiss her. “Tough guy, huh?” She pulled a car remote from her pocket and pushed it, making the lights flash on a silver pickup on the edge of the dirt-and-gravel parking area beside the bar.

“Sounds like you’ve been around a few.”

She opened the driver’s door to the pickup and turned, standing in the gap, staring at him, her head tilted. “A few. But they’re nothing like you.”

Ty closed the gap between them, putting one hand on the door frame, shielding her from view of the parking lot but maintaining space between them. He knew better than to get close enough to be swamped by temptation. The Mesmer might be working on him, but that didn’t mean she’d understand if he came on too strong. Especially not after the fight.

“If you want to head home, I understand. I’ll stay here awhile and make sure those guys don’t follow you home.”

She reached out and grabbed fistfuls of his T-shirt near his collarbones, pulling him close until he was chest to chest with her. The soft swells of her breasts pressed against him and the minty scent of her hair, and hint of lilac on her skin teased his sensitive sense of smell. Everything within him went silent and still, fixated on the lush curve of her mouth so damn close to his he could feel the warmth of her breath.

“What I want is for you to come home with me.” Jess stood on her tiptoes and looked up into his face, the dark fringe of lashes around her eyes making the blue luminous. Her rapid pulse beat against his chest, taking over the rhythm until his matched the pace she set. For a second the world tilted sideways.

Ty’s gaze dropped to the silky, damp edge of her lips and he was lost. He dipped down and kissed her. Her lips were soft and willing, tasting of peppermint. She tasted so damn sweet, hot and spicy all at once. A warm, viscous heat flowed through his veins, coating and drowning out every other sensation until he was hot and hard at the same time.

Ty gripped the edge of the truck’s door frame, nearly denting the sheet metal with his fingertips. But he was determined to keep his hands to himself, even though they itched to touch her. Heat seeped through his shirt, the temperature difference amplified by the chill in the air. The kiss turned deeper, slicker, the tip of her tongue brushing against his. The spicy fragrance of female that spiked the air left no doubt she was aroused. When they broke apart, both of them were breathing hard, their breath creating misty white clouds.

“You sure about this?” He could control his body, but not the rough edge of his voice as he struggled to maintain composure. “I could follow you.”

Jess looked up at him, her dark lashes dropping a fraction, giving her a sultry look. “Hop in.”

He was smart enough not to argue with her, but that didn’t mean that the little voice of human reason in the back of his head wasn’t screaming loudly that this was stupid and rash. He should take his own vehicle so he didn’t get stuck who knew where. He didn’t know a damn thing about her. Couldn’t read her mind and certainly hadn’t asked enough questions. But this was a Mesmer, the wild Were instinct side of him shouted back. No one, Were especially, could blame him for responding so quickly and profoundly to her. And hell, he could always follow his nose and walk back if he needed to.

“Anything you say,” he answered. He waited until she climbed up into the cab, admiring the way the dark denim jeans hugged the curve of her ass, then closed the truck door and walked around the back of the pickup. An uneasy sensation raised the hairs on his skin. He glanced over his shoulder one last time to make sure they weren’t being followed.

Pick a Spot. Any Spot! Killer Interview. Eden's Sins.

Welcome back! Popping into A Writer's Mind for the first time? Well, you've arrived at a fantastic time. Today is day two of Edin's Sin's, End of Week Character Blowout. What does that mean? Simple. Yesterday and today I'm interviewing Jovan Hause and André St. James from Jacylyn Tracy’s latest release, Eden’s Sins. Though they were interviewed seperately I've included their answers to the same questions side by side so that we can easily see how well these two really know one another.

Jaclyn is graciously giving away TWO eBooks, Eden's Black Rose and Eden's Sins, to one lucky commenter!

So sit back, relax and let's get on with the interview...

SKY:  Ah, love is in the air. What is the single most romantic thing he’s/she’s done for you?

JOVAN: The ninny proposed to me and gave me a cigar band as a bauble to wear because he is as impulsive as I am. Got down on his knee, he did, in the restaurant, placed his fingers where they should have only been when the 2 of us were tangled up and naked and popped the question.

ANDRE: Took care of her and kept her safe, or tried to until she regained her memory. I asked her to  marry me and she said she’d sleep on it. After 3 years you’d think she was well rested… The answer wasn’t the response I’d hoped for.

SKY:  He/she has a feature that draws your eye every time. Care to share? His/her eye constantly roams to a particular part of your person. Tell, tell!

JOVAN: André has the most remarkable deep blue almost black eyes I’ve ever seen. They’re more transparent then me scrying glass. You can see into his soul. When he glances at me? He’s a nymph I’m telling you. The man is constantly in a state. His pants are always taught in one spot. I mean really taught. His crowning jewels are worth their weight in gold.

ANDRE: Pick a spot. Any spot! Oh, my Lady Sky, you she-devil. You’re as naughty as Jovan. Yes, she seems to fancy my leather chaps as well, or what lays beneath them. She is infatuated with my lips too. Allow me to pucker up and make silly kiss-kiss noises. You’re blushing my Lady, Sky.  Do you wish my lips to travel across your flesh? I must disappoint you. Jovan is the only woman my lips will ever travel over or under.  But it’s fun to fantasize.

SKY:   How do you think Andre/Jovan would answer the following…  Our favorite thing to do together is…?

JOVAN: Get naked. Eat. Get anked again. Kill off zombies. Get naked. Sleep. A little. And well, you get the picture. You’re a nosey buggar, Sky.

ANDRE: Jovan is nymph. Lucky me, right? She loves it when, oh wait, I can’t kiss and tell. If
nothing else I am a true gentleman, well, except for that time in the restaurant. She went three shades of red. As did the others looking on. That was fun. And then there was that time on the walkway outside the hotel… What we do best together is be together. Side by side whether we’re making love or war there’s no other woman I’d desire by my side.

SKY:  You and Andre/Jovan just don’t see eye to eye on what issue?

JOVAN: Unfortunately it’s marriage.  I have yet to see a relationship last. And then there’s my Bound Grimoire I mentioned earlier. The tome has an expiration date for all the royals and since André is in the line-up, well I don’t want to see us just a page in ahistory book with a bloody ending.

ANDRE: Marriage. She’s a fickle one there. Can’t seem to get her to say yes to me, regardless of my overflowing charm. Ok, stop laughing Sky. That’s not funny.

SKY:   He/she said one thing to you that you’ll never forget. What was it?

JOVAN: Good-bye. He left me. I knew he would. Someday I’ll get my heart back from the bastard. Got a hankie? My eyes and nose are leaky now.

ANDRE: That she’d never forgive me.  I’ll spend my life making it up to her.

BLURB

Jovan Hause made a date with destiny after she cast one impetuous love spell asking for a man to make her forget everything, but their love. A moment later she encountered a steamy vision of what her future held and by the gods she believed she’d been sent one. Oh, the things the man did to her body with his tongue alone. Unfortunately she had no idea of the man’s name or what he looked like, but she did know he would arrive with the next train. All she had to do was convince her overbearing brother she’d be fine. Blazing a trail to the station she plowed one gent down in the street and never looked back, unfortunately all the passengers were gone when she arrived. Humiliation steering her home, Jovan slammed into the same man a second time only this time she saw stars.

On his way back to Paris after chasing one ghoul in a city of walking cadavers André St. James got knocked on his royal rump by what could only be called a goddess. What to do with a beautiful woman he’d just butt heads with? Nothing gentlemanly came to mind until she regained consciousness. He took the young lady to his hotel room and called for help. Drawn to her, he planted his nose in the crook of her neck and by the gods now understands why cats go insane with catnip. This woman has intoxicated him with her scent alone. Deciding he only knows one way to wake the woman, he tries for true love’s kiss. The silly tale worked, just not like the charm he’d hoped for. The woman had a temper and nearly chomped off his tongue when she came around.

After three days of amnesia, Jovan is no closer to finding her past, but she realizes her future looks royally smashing. Jovan and André find they’re a perfect match together whether it’s killing the zombies and assassins after them or having their bodies tangled and fused together in one orgasmic tryst after another. When a man from Jovan’s past called her name, Jovan’s world came crashing down because her memory returned. Finding out she’s a witch a lynch mob awaits her with a short rope and a sturdy tree. And just when she didn’t think it could get any worse, standing there with a rope around her delicate neck and praying for a speedy rescue, a woman came from nowhere and yanked the chair from under her. When she comes to she has choices to make. Her brother is dying after being savagely attacked by werewolves. If she goes to André her brother might die. If she goes to her brother she might lose André. Her choices are a testament to the saying; Life isn’t fair. She cares for her brother and runs like the wind for the train but once again finds she is standing at an empty train depot alone.

André saw her swinging from the gallows, feet kicking and blue eyes bulging. He felt his heart stop. Then she wasn’t dead and his heart found a rhythm… until she waltzed off with a skeletal man without even a ‘kiss my royal ass good bye’.

Three years later fate’s hand deals Jovan and André a second chance, but first they must defeat their past including the perverse undead trying to steal the throne from under them, not caring who gets crowned in the process.

Jovan Hause and André St. James Tell All! Jaclyn Tracey's, Eden's Sins.

June's nearly over but the fun’s just beginning here at A Writer’s Mind ! It's time for another 'End of Week Character Blowout.' Today and tomorrow I’ll be inviting over Jovan Hause and André St. James from Jaclyn Tracy’s latest release, Eden’s Sins. Typically, I post the heroine’s interview on Thursday and the hero’s on Friday but thought it might be interesting to post the answers to the same questions one right after the other. So I’ll post half the interview today and the other half tomorrow. Mind you, the characters were NOT together when interviewed so it’ll be interesting to see how well their individual answers compare. *grins*

GIVEAWAY! Be sure to leave a comment for a chance to win TWO eBooks, Eden's Black Rose AND Eden's Sins.

Before we get started let’s learn a little bit more about this fabulous book!

Nothing gentlemanly came to mind until she regained
consciousness.

Interview time!

SKY:  Tell us a little bit about you.

JOVAN: Thank you for having me here today Sky. I—ah, don’t know if I should tell you all about me, because there’s a few people out there that would love naught more than to see me swinging from the gallows or seeing if I sink or swim. I am what some may call a hag, although I find this description completely unflattering. Others call me a witch. My brother, Julian, on occasion has called me something that rhymes with that. I have the ability to stun a crowd of people. André, my lover, thinks it’s due to my beauty. I’m going to let him keep thinking this.

In reality I have a power called the flash of light. It’s sort of like staring into the sun too long. Makes ya forget everything coz you’re too worried about your brain sizzling. Instant amnsesia. I have a true green thumb. No really, it’s green most of the time. I am an excellent gardener.  Plant my fingers in the earth’s rich soil and daisies and any other life form pop up. Not dead people though. My soon to be sister-in-law Serina has that power covered. She just has no clue how to control it.

So, I am also somewhat impetuous. I happened to cast a little love spell and it got me more than I bargained for. Amnesia for 3 days. A lover that stole my heart and a maraude of ghouls, vamps, and werewolves pining for me and my favorite book, The Bound Grimoire.  Am I rambling on? I’m sorry. You keep interrupting me, waving a white flag trying to ask another question. I’ll shush.

ANDRE: Where to start? Well, I am 1 of 3. Set of triplets. We were lied to our entire lives and brought up as cousins. Or I was. My sister, Raven and my identical twin, Lucian were raised together. I got the evil aunt who hired a black witch to give us all potions to make us out to be the village idiots and she wanted to budge the line to the throne and she didn’t care who she crowned to get there. She murdered our parents when we were sixteen then shortly thereafter she fell off the face of the earth. We thought she died until she recently crawled out of her casket.

I am smitten with a young enchantress, Jovan Hause. Bespelled works as well. I can’t take my eyes off her. Seriously, every time I do we end up in trouble fighting for our lives. The woman is trouble. Fun, but trouble, in an exhausting, exhilarating sense. I’ve never felt more alive when she’s by my side fighting the undead.

SKY:   Remembering the moment you first laid eyes on Andre/Jovan, what thoughts come to mind?

JOVAN: The daft bloke was in my way. I was on my way to the train depot to meet the man of my dreams and he was a casualty of my trampling him down.  For the record, when I got to the depot it was void of people. The second time I slammed into André, I had a moment to take in all his glory before I saw stars, yes, the gaseous little bubbles and I passed out. The 3rd time isn’t necessarily the charm either. I woke up with his tongue tickling me tonsils and I chomped on the fleshy stub. Later I would be thankful I didn’t sever the little muscle because the man knows how to use it. Did I say too much again? Did you spike my drink? I never talk this much.

ANDRE: My life just got turned upside down. No really, it did. The woman knocked me on my arse and when I got up I knew my life would forever be changed. Jovan laying there unconscious reminded me of an angel. Truth be known, she’s a little devil. The woman taunts me without realizing it, or maybe she knows exactly what she does and enjoys playing with me. I know I enjoy it. 

SKY:   He/she has one trait you adored from the start. What is it? You know without doubt he/she appreciates one of your traits. Share what you think that is.

JOVAN: André has the most sensual lips I’ve ever seen on a man. There’s a pout on the bottom lip I feel is my goddess given duty to try to kiss away. And the man is always protecting me. I find it nice. Reassuring. Sometimes flat out annoying. I can take care of meself and him. He’s also got a wicked sense of humor. Or at least he thinks he does 

ANDRE: Jovan is outspoken and strong willed. All the women I’ve ever known you can compare to a blank piece of parchment. Jovan is an unedited, untamed sultry heroine who demands your attention. She has mine and unfortunately every other male in town. She’s bewitched an entire village.

In me? What’s not to appreciate or like? I’m solid, ruggedly handsome and funny. I’m laughing at your face right now thinking I’ve the largest hubris around. That’s not all that’s large…Wink wink!

SKY:  He/she has one trait you’d change if you could. What is it? Oh yeah, there’s a trait you know he’d/she’d change about you…fess up!

JOVAN: He’s a hopeless romantic. He thinks true love’s kiss is the answer to all relationship problems. I wish he was right and it was that simple, but me mum taught me differently. Men leave when you least expect it and most need them.

For me to change? Won’t happen. I’m stubborn, foul lipped and impetuous. And he loves me for it. Well of course he does, he’s hopelessly an imbecile. Handsome as hell though. And sexy.

ANDRE: She can’t trust the one thing we do best together. Love one another. She has this silly notion I’m going to leave her someday. Not on her life. She calls me a hopeless romantic. Not hopeless at all. In fact quite the contrary. She’s the one thing I live for.

SKY:  Thanks for a great interview!

Readers, be sure to pop back in tomorrow for the second half of the interview. Also, don't forget to comment for a chance to win!

Human No Longer Backstory by Kathryn Meyer Griffith.

Today it’s my pleasure to feature Kathryn Meyer Griffith, author of Human No Longer

Let’s hear from Kathryn…

Human No Longer Backstory

By Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Purchase at Amazon

Human No Longer. It’s my 17th published book – yeah! – and my fourth vampire novel. First, let me tell you where I got the idea for it. About five years ago, I was still trying to please the agent (who I no longer have) who’d sold four of my earlier paperback novels to Zebra in the 1990’s and, because she didn’t seem to like any of my new potential concepts, I asked her what she would like to see. Out of nowhere, she said, “You know your 1991 Zebra vampire novel, Vampire Blood? I liked that one a lot. The characters. Well, how about writing me a sort of sequel with basically the same cast, but with this premise: A woman, a mother, after being turned into a bloodthirsty vampire, must learn to adapt to the human world and still be a good mother. You know, how would she deal with everything when she had children she loved; didn’t want to hurt or leave them…but still had the need to feed on blood? Still had all the urges and desires of a vampire?

Yikes. I hated the idea but, to please her, I went ahead and begrudgingly wrote the book. I tentatively called it The Vampire’s Children or The Vampire Mother or something like that. I finished it. Not too happy with it. I had never liked writing what other people wanted me to write. Stubborn, I guess.

My agent, in the meantime, had begun her own online erotic (which I don’t much care to write) publishing company and when I’d gotten done with the novel she was too busy to even read the finished book. She handed it off to an apprentice intern. An intern? What? Who didn’t like it at all. Duh. So, disgusted, I tucked the file away on my computer and, fed up with the whole agent thing, returned to writing what I wanted to write. An end of days novel called A Time of Demons and a new vampire novel where the evil vampire wasn’t a mother. In 2010 I went with a new publisher, Kim Richards at Damnation Books/Eternal Press, and she contracted not only those two books but asked me if I’d like to rewrite, update and rerelease all 7 of my older out-of-print Leisure and Zebra paperbacks going back to 1984. Heck yes, I said! So for the next 2 years I was busy doing that. Some of those books were over twenty-five years old and very outdated. Their rewriting, editing and rereleasing took a lot of work and time.

Then, in late 2012, I decided to take a very old book of mine (Predator) which was contracted to Zebra Paperbacks in 1993 but, in the end, never actually released, and just for the heck of it, as my 16th novel, self-publish it to Amazon Kindle Direct. Just in ebook form. A kind of grand experiment. The first time I’ve ever tried self-publishing. See how it’d sell. Dinosaur Lake. A story about a hungry mutant dinosaur loose in the waters of Crater Lake that goes on a rampage. Hey, I wrote Dinosaur Lake before Jurassic Park, the book, ever came out! Really. I had my cover artist, Dawne Dominique make a cover for it…and it was stunning with a dinosaur roaring on the front. And I did everything else myself. Editing. Proofing. Formatting. With forty years and endless publishers behind me I felt I was capable. And it’d been selling so well I decided to self-publish another one…and I remembered the mother/vampire book. Hmmm. So I revamped (ha, ha, inside joke), polished, and self-published it, as well. I retitled it Human No Longer. Got my fabulous cover artist, Dawne Dominique, to make me a lovely haunting cover with a troubled-looking woman standing outside a spooky house, with two children behind her in its shadows, on the front and voila! All in all, I don’t think the book turned out half bad. In fact, with the changes I made I think it’s not bad at all. Now I just hope my readers will like it.

So that’s the story of Human No Longer. My 17th published novel.

EXCERPT from Human No Longer

The moon had inched downwards in the sky as she turned and headed towards the farmhouse. It was time to return home to her children.

Awareness of the shadows stalking her, an encircling noose of entrapment, began once she entered the woods. She’d let her guard down again. So foolish of her.

Before she could run, the shadows were on her. A steely hand grabbed one arm, another clamped around the other. Her instincts warned she was in real danger. These were her kind but not like her. There was this stench of malevolence around them. Strong as smoke.

Don’t let them capture you. You must get away.

“Ah,” a voice spoke near her ear, “you are strong. Zebulon said you were. I didn’t believe him. It’s beyond me how you’ve come to be what you are. It’s extraordinarily rare you didn’t die and then became one of us. You’ll come with us. Now.”

“Who are you?” she demanded, not struggling to escape. Be smart. Wait for a chance. Think of Teddy and Sarah. You must protect them.

“I go by Dante. And you?”

She refused to answer. “Can’t you read my mind?”

He didn’t answer for a minute. Then he replied, “It doesn’t matter. All you need to know is you belong to us. We’ll decide what to do with you. Come along.”

“And if I don’t come along as you so nicely put it?”

“Then,” his laugh was somehow sinister, “we’ll have no further use for you. You’ll die here and now. I’m stronger than you. We’re all stronger than you.”

As afraid as she was, the words slipped out, “Did you kill my husband?”

“Your husband?” As if he didn’t know what she was talking about.

“Jeff Sanders. We were attacked in St. Louis beneath a bridge late one night the end of August. He died. I lived. Something, a cloud of shadows, swept in and out and left him dead.”

The vampire didn’t respond at first as if he were mulling it over.

“Well, did you?”

“Most likely. We dispatch so many of you. You’re our nourishment. We travel all over your world.” He snapped his fingers and the crack ricocheted around them. “You can’t expect me to recall every last pitiful one and where.”

The heartlessness in his voice made her instantly loathe him, as his grip tightened.

“How did you find me?”

“What you are called to us once your change was complete. It’s the way we knew you existed. Distance doesn’t matter.”

“Are you…am I…a vampire?”

“A vampire?”

“A vampire,” she hissed.

Another disgusted laugh. “Vampire? That’s what your kind think we are, except we’re so much more. We’re from another…place.”

His free hand waved in front of her face. “A vampire is a creature you humans made up. We’re not dead or undead, nor one of your devil’s disciples or any of those ridiculous things. One day we’ll rule this planet and all you cattle on it.

“I’ll give you a choice. You join us or not. It matters little to me either way. We just can’t have you out in the world running free. Alerting people to our existence before we’re ready for that to happen. It puts us in danger. If you’re not with us, you’re our enemy–and our enemies we do not allow to live.”

She didn’t want to join him. Them. She wanted to scratch his eyes out and break his neck. Jeff had been more than this monster’s nourishment; his death more than a consumed Happy Meal to her, to Teddy and Sarah. Damn if she was going with them! The rage, fear and loss of the last month boiled over inside her and ignoring the words and warnings, she tore from their grasp and fled. Her body, lifting from the ground, moved faster than the wind through the night trees.

Behind her she heard their curses and pursuit.

She thought of the farmhouse, longing for the safety of its walls, and suddenly she was there in her kitchen. Her enemies left behind somewhere in the woods.

She got away this time. How? Could they track her? Find her? She didn’t know.

She held her breath, listening, for what felt like an eternity. Nothing. After a while she thought she might be safe. No one had followed her.

She consciously cloaked her thoughts, her very being, and shutting her eyes, leaned against the wall so she wouldn’t sink to the floor.

About Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Since childhood I’ve always been an artist and worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world and for newspapers for twenty-three years before I quit to write full time. I began writing novels at 21, over forty years ago now, and have had seventeen (ten romantic horror, two romantic SF horror, one romantic suspense, one romantic time travel, one historical romance and two murder mysteries) previous novels, two novellas and twelve short stories published from Zebra Books, Leisure Books, Avalon Books, The Wild Rose Press, Damnation Books/Eternal Press and Amazon Kindle Direct.

I’ve been married to Russell for almost thirty-five years; have a son, James, and two grandchildren, Joshua and Caitlyn, and I live in a small quaint town in Illinois called Columbia, which is right across the JB Bridge from St. Louis, Mo. We have three quirky cats, ghost cat Sasha, live cats Cleo and Sasha (Too), and the five of us live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I’ve been an artist, and a folk singer in my youth with my brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I’ll probably write stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes.
