Let’s Interview!

What inspired you to write this book?

I was intrigued by the short, fierce, and uncompromising Terriot prince who appeared in name only in an earlier book in my “By Moonlight” series to threaten that book’s hero’s gentle cousin Kendra with a forced mating in order for to save her family and him to claim his clan’s crown.  The Terriots, unlike the disorganized clan of shape-shifter in New Orleans, were brutal warriors who took what they wanted and wanted whatever they saw. And Cale wanted Kendra. Then I got wondering what kind of past would draw two such unlikely opposites together.  That was explored in PRINCE OF SHADOWS. When they had their happily-ever-after, I felt things were still unresolved. There was too much bad blood between their family and too much guilt over deeds done for them to settle down comfortably to rule their clan. And then Cale gets a call from Kendra’s cousin asking for his help . . .

How did you come up with the title?

Thinking up unique yet similar words to go into a series title gets complicated. UNLEASHED seemed perfect for this story because it’s about letting go of the past as well as regrets and restraints. And, when he’s fighting there’s that control collar on my dog of war.

If you had to sell your book based on one run of dialogue (start quote to end quote), which would it be?

"Don't make the mistake of thinking I'm not in control. Those who have in the past regret that error. Those few still alive.  I am a Terriot king. I am never weak when strength is demanded. You'd be a fool to believe otherwise."  - Cale Terriot, House of Terriot

Tell us about your book cover and how it relates to your story.

UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS is my second self-published book out of 58 (!) so developing the cover was as important to me as writing the story.  It had to be just right.  I was looking for something that would blend with the other covers in the series but standout at the same time. After spending hours and hours looking at “sexy male torso” graphics, I finally found one that represented both the driven and the softer side of my hero. But my graphic artist, Patricia Lazarus, who has done tons of great stuff for me, wasn’t sure the dimensions would work for the cover. So, back to torsos . . . We both kept coming back to the mysterious figure in the hoodie, but I still wasn’t sold until she worked up both graphics and I knew that was the one. I got her to compromise by using the other as the back cover and in my promo and book trailer. Best of both worlds!

Are you currently working on another story? If so, we’d love some details.

I’m putting together a novella series called “The House of Terriot Foursome.”  Once you meet Cale’s hot stuff brothers, you’ll understand why. Their conflicts are set up in UNLEASHED and it was hard for me to concentrate on doing edits with their individual storylines distracting me.  I can’t wait to get to them.

Tell us about your favorite writing environment. Is it indoors, outdoors, a special room, etc.

I have a loft office in my apartment dedicated to my craft (and my reading/writing clutter). I hit the computer every morning at 5:00 a.m., armed with my Keurig coffee, and tackle my work-in-progress until I have to leave for my 9-to-5.

I’d lost steam writing UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS and took a break to visit one of my critique partners who lives in Arizona.  Borrowing her desk for a week, looking out over desert creatures at sunrise as they came to get water and food right outside the window was just what I needed to revitalize. Talk about inspiration! I think I wrote five chapters while I was there. Environment is everything when it comes to creativity!

It’s time to promo. What is your favorite marketing tool?

I actually LOVE doing promo.  I’m OCD so organizing and list making is my thing. I enjoy wading into the planning process, setting up blog visits, creating content for playlists and book trailers, doing the back cover copy, hunting for those elusive graphics—the whole enchilada.  Example: my Haunted Open House Book Party that’s going on this week.  That’s a lot to put together along with a self-pubbed book! Thank goodness for my virtual assistant, the Novel Difference, for taking my ideas to fruition.  I’m an idea person, so I guess my favorite tool is the mighty list to follow.
Do you write books in series? If so, share a bit about the series you currently have published or are coming soon.

My “By Moonlight” dark paranormal shape-shifter series started with the book of my heart and a fabulous hero in the dark, dangerous and yet still vulnerable Max Savoie. Once I started, I was in the middle of book four before I came up for breath. Those books were unique in that they contain the same hero and heroine—Max, bodyguard to a mobster and possible Prophesied One to an outcast Shifter clan in New Orleans and NOPD detective Charlotte Caissie who is determined to bring down his boss/mentor. The series branched off from there into the “Shadows” books developing secondary characters and the same underlying story arc while exploring new plotlines.  Readers hounded me to bring Max back in his own book, which I did with REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT and when Cale, my hero in PRINCE OF SHADOWS, appeared in it, he started to run off with the book so I had to promise him more of his story in UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS.  Though the books are all intertwined, each can stand alone.

If you could make changes to a story you’ve already written, which would it be and why?

I’ve gotten the unique opportunity to revisit the books in my “Touched by Midnight” vampire romance series.  The first three of the nine book series are finally back in print after being buried in the ‘90s. ImaJinn Books, who picked up the original series with books 4-9, is repackaging all the books with new covers (which I’ve gotten to help design!) and a chance for me to spruce up my prose.  The first three were hardly edited at all and there were a lot of glaring errors as well as passive “was”s and bouncing point of view. It was the ‘90s, after all, and we didn’t know any better!  It gave me a chance to fall in love with the series all over again.  Book 4, MIDNIGHT ENCHANTMENT is a late October rerelease.

I was able to do the same when Bell Bridge, another imprint of BelleBooks, reissued my four Dana Ransom contemporary romances, providing them to a whole new audience.

I’m hoping to self-publish my old Dana Ransom western historical series next year, so that gives me lots of books (and torsos) to play with!

Excerpt from UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS . . .Cale

He feared no man, no foe, no obstacle or challenge. He’d learned to stand his ground and take it without a wince while growing up with the most to prove in the House of Terriot. He’d been schooled beneath the heavy heel and meaty fists of Bram Terriot, bearing the marks of those lessons scored into his skin and once tender psyche. He understood intimidation better than he did compassion. Had once indulged in every savagery Lee now expected from him. Would have become a brutal, heartless monster walking the same path his father followed had it not been for the two things that called to his latent decency: The brothers who’d fearlessly stood beside him and the female brave enough to believe his claims.

He owed them. He owed his family prosperous lives without fear and subjugation, where pride wasn’t measured in cruelties. He owed the woman he loved the fulfillment of promises made by a starry-eyed boy. He owed them a future in which they bowed to no one and had no reason to expect the worse from one another. And to achieve those things, all he had to do was right the wrongs of the man who’d desecrated the crown he now represented.

All . . .

With a weary laugh, Cale closed his eyes.

His debt. His burden. His to carry and complete alone. No whining about the costs to body, heart or soul. No crying over what couldn’t be changed, repaid or repaired. No shirking from sacrifices sure to cost more than he’d ever thought to wager. The blood on his hands would never come clean. There was no forgiveness for his sins—the sins of the father now those of the son. He was lost but he wouldn’t drag those he loved and respected down with him. Not while he still had strength and breath and opportunity.

He couldn’t save his people hiding on their mountain top. He couldn’t purge his guilt without a willingness to surrender his life.

And he couldn’t protect his mate if he couldn’t provide her with his heir.

“Murderer!” She shoved him back with such force, he toppled from the bed in a tangle of furs.

“Fiona, ’tis me, Duncan,” he cried as he struggled to stand.

What had come over her? One moment they were caressing beneath the warm furs, and the next she had sprung from his bed, screaming like a banshee.

“I know who you are, MacQuoid. Dragonslayer!” She ended on a shrill sob before covering her face with her hands.

Duncan stood, kicking the furs to the side and reaching for her. “I am a dragonslayer no more, Fiona.”

“Why did you make love to me? You should have killed me like you did the rest of my kind.” She rushed through the flap of his tiny hut into the cool morning air.

Swearing under his breath, Duncan wrapped a fur around his waist and chased after her.

Surely they had both gone mad.

The morning was exceptionally cold, and Fiona wore not a stitch of clothes. A chill wind from the north whipped the heavy branches overhead into a frenzy. Autumn leaves danced around Fiona’s feet as she wept, kneeling beside a fallen oak.

The sharp edge of her suffering pierced the cavity of Duncan’s chest. He still did not understand how her emotions had been tethered to his own, but he did feel her pain, so keen he thought his heart would break from it.

“Fiona, you are mistaken. Come inside where ’tis warm,” he pleaded.

She looked up at him through tear-soaked eyes. “You killed my mother!” Her body shook with violent tremors. “You struck her with a spear, and she had never sought to harm mankind. Never!”

Duncan’s head spun and he felt weightless. Mouth agape, he stared at her, hoping his senses would return. And then the words from the she-dragon reverberated through his skull.

I have never sought to harm mankind. Never!

“’Twas a dragon I speared, not a human.” But even as he said the words, he knew ’twas a lie. That dragon had been no dumb beast. She was something more.

“She was my mother!” Fiona wailed. “She was kind and good and all I had left in the world.”

“Fiona,” Duncan struggled for words, knowing nothing he could say would ever bring back her mother. “Forgive me.” Stepping forward, he reached out, needing to touch her and soothe her pain.

“Do not touch me! Do not ever touch me!”

What happened next Duncan would not have believed had he not seen the she-dragon transform into a beautiful woman each night in his dreams.

But those were dreams, and the dragon hovering above him now was no fantasy, though just a moment before she had been his beautiful lass.

Panting like a wounded animal, she singed his hair with her fiery breath.

Duncan did not cower. He did not fear. They had shared a connection when he loved her beneath the light of the full moon. She would not harm him now.

He looked up into her amber eyes, which were the same as last night, only larger, sadder. ’Twas then he knew neither of them would come away from this unscathed. For her heart was shattered, and he did not know how he could live without her forgiveness.

Book Description

Phoebe lives trapped between two worlds. Born an Amazon warrior, she’s sworn to serve the Greek pantheon. It’s her work as a scholar in the human world that gives her life passion and purpose and eases her heart—which shattered when the pantheon forced her to abandon her human lover.

Alexander Xenos is world renowned classics expert, who has dedicated his life to the study of ancient cultures and promoting peace. His fame and global adventures hide a hole in his heart, ripped out by a beautiful, gentle scholar, who shut him out cold after the most intense love affair he'd ever had.

Thirty years later, Sander meets his long lost love, only to learn she's an Amazon, the mythical gods are real, and they are about to go to war. And Phoebe, who still sets his blood to boil, is in the thick of it.  He'll have to prevent a conflict between the Greek and Norse pantheons or lose her again—this time permanently.

Interview Time!

What inspired you to write this book?

A couple of years ago, some critique partners and I decided to write an anthology together.  Each of was had to have a club run by a siren proprietress.  We had free rein to write any type of story—the siren sisters would be the connecting link. While we never did produce the anthology, I did write the story, which became Thirteen Nights, Divine Temptation 1.   I feel in love with the secondary characters, and wanted them to have a happy ending.  As luck would have it, Ellora's Cave launched its VaVaBoomers series which was love stories for those over 50, which gave me the opportunity to write Phoebe and Sander's story and give it to home. Life Reignited is part of two series: VaVaBoomers and Divine Temptation.

Tell us about your book cover and how it relates to your story.

For the cover artist, I identified the power of ancient knowledge as a key theme of the story and she knocked it out of the park. You have the hot guy in a library, just crackling with magic and power.  The hero, Sander, wins battles using knowledge and his mind.  While Phoebe, the heroine, is also a scholar she is an Amazon warrior and tends to fight with her fists first.

Are you currently working on another story? If so, we’d love some details.

I am finishing up Hope Restored, Divine Temptation 3. The heroine is Marta, who appears in both Thirteen Nights and Life Reignited. She's not very likeable in Thirteen Nights so I use Life Reignited to soften her a bit, but not completely. In Hope Restored, we learn why she is the way she is, which makes her past actions very forgiveable. Here's a short section, where Marta meets Paean, our hero, for the first time.  Her prickly personality is front and center until Paean is forced to look below the surface.

A tall, leanly-muscled woman, over six feet, light brown hair pulled back in a French braid glared at him. The aristocratic beauty of her face was marred by a stare that spit venom and a mouth pursed so tight her lips were barely visible. Dark circles rimmed her eyes. She rubbed her hand as if it had been hurt. “That case is dangerous,” she growled. “Take better care of it.”

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t paying attention.”

“Ya think?”

She was a prickly pear. “Let me see it. I know a little first aid.”

He put his guitar and backpack down to examine her outstretched hand, surprised she let him touch it. He turned the arm toward him, noticing an unusual tattoo on her shoulder—the kill markings of an Amazon warrior. Fury erupted in his gut, clawed up his chest into this throat. Even after a millennia, the wound remained raw. Not that it was her fault. She would have no idea who he was. He’d been thrown off Olympus so long ago, his name disappeared from the common language. Maybe somewhere in an old dusty old scroll the historians no longer picked up, there was reference to him, but he doubted it.

“Are you going to patch it up or just stare at it?”

“Not liking my bedside manner or you just a grouchy patient?’ He couldn’t stop the resentment from leaking into his tone until he looked deep into her eyes. She wasn’t angry, she was tortured.

What sort of personality does your hero have?

Sander is geeky, fearless, with a sexy British accent and an Angus McGyver I-can-fix-anything approach to life. He's equally at home trekking through the savannah, searching for artifacts in Scandinavia, writing a blog, teaching a class or presenting a paper. He doesn't do love. He never got over Phoebe, or the pain of losing her.

What sort of personality does your heroine have?

She's stoic, moving forward with life even though she has a hole in her heart the size of Texas.  She's an Amazon, who struggles with being an Amazon. She'd be happier doing research, writing papers, and being bonded to her love, who she had to leave because of her obligations to the gods. She's a little fearful of upending the apple cart, but ultimately learns that it takes more courage to rebel against authorities than it does to fight your enemies in a fist fight you were trained from birth to win.

Tell us about your favorite writing environment. Is it indoors, outdoors, a special room, etc.

I write on my couch, with my feet up.  The room is silent. I know many prefer to write with music, but that does not work for me.  The only downside is that I don’t have soundtracks for my books that I can share with readers.

Do you write books in series? If so, share a bit about the series you currently have published or are coming soon.

I do write books is series.  Life Reignited is part of my Divine Temptation Series with Ellora's Cave, all centered on Amazon women, obligated to the Greek Pantheon, who find a way to be with the men they love. Often, in many paranormal books we find the men who are bonded warriors. I switched that, and made the women's tribe the group that flows through the series.  Divine Temptation includes Thirteen Nights,  A Flicker of Power (1.5 available free), Life Reignited, and coming next year, Hope Restored.

If you could make changes to a story you’ve already written, which would it be and why?

I am happy with the story in Life Reignited overall. One thing I would do if I rewrote it today would be to add hints of a romance between Forseti, the Norse God of Justice, and his head Valkyrie, Sigrid.  There is one suggestion of this, but it could easily be written off as the action of a body guard.

Sander wished Phoebe didn’t feel so enticing. Her unique orchid scent wove its way through his bloodstream, mucking up his focus. He couldn’t square the gentle, quick-witted, brilliant scholar he loved as Cassie with the sad-eyed, battle-scarred Amazon warrior called Phoebe fitted against him. His body remembered her. No other woman ever came close to her creativity, capabilities and stamina in bed. She taught him what it was like to fully lose himself in a woman, and he’d never been able to replicate it. He finally understood why—it was never a fair fight. A human woman could not match a physically enhanced being. He’d always thought she was the love of his life, but did he even know her? Nothing made sense, except the hard-on straining against his zipper. Her physical impact hadn’t dimmed. At all.

When Phoebe stabilized, she led them back to her room at Neutral Ground. She appeared perfectly fine after a fight that would have killed most humans. At her door, she pressed her thumbprint on a small indent above the handle, then pushed it open.

“How did you open the door?” He peered inside. “And what did you do to merit this suite?” Molded ceiling, velvet coverings, red and gold Persian carpets and antique furniture that reminded him of a bedroom he’d find in Buckingham Palace. He was sure the paintings—Botticelli’s Birth of Aphrodite, Rubens’ Judgment of Paris among others—were the artists’ originals. Phoebe was right. This would be an intellectual candy land if his emotions weren’t tied up into knots.

A distraught laugh whispered out of her. “I ticked off the Elders and a portion of the Greek pantheon resistant to change. Neutral Ground is one of six safe havens worldwide sanctioned by the Council of Pantheons. Anyone who threatens me here is subject to death. Outside, well you saw for yourself. The DNA lock is an added protection, just in case. Thank you for coming to my rescue, by the way. My fighting skills are not what they used to be.” Her cheeks burned red. Was she embarrassed?

“You’re welcome.” In the corner an inlaid mahogany desk piled high with ancient scrolls drew his attention. “Are those what I think they are?” Her eyes followed his gaze and her eyebrows rose in what looked like an aha moment, then an indulgent and very real smile lit up her face. It was the first time tonight he’d seen the vivacity that lived in his memories, and he’d sneaked glimpses of her all evening.

“Yes, they are. Ancient scrolls documenting the history, culture and science of the Greek pantheon. I even have an original of The Republic by Plato, and Sappho’s poetry. You’re welcome to take a look.”

As a classics scholar, he read ancient Greek, Latin, Scandinavian, Teutonic and Celtic languages. This was a treasure trove he couldn’t resist. “Aren’t you afraid of ruining them?”

“They’re protected by pantheon magic. They can’t be destroyed.” She hooked her arm through his and guided him to the corner. After scrutinizing the pile, she picked up a scroll and handed it to him. Her fingers lingered on his hand longer than necessary. Sparks ignited under the touch. This was the woman he remembered—glowing eyes, an impish grin, with ancient knowledge flowing around her as if it were part of her aura. If there were more lines radiating from her eyes and lips, they softened her, made her more the Cassie he had adored, less the unknown Phoebe.

He took the scroll in one hand and pulled his reading glasses out of his jacket pocket with the other. He got the spectacles a year ago and wasn’t used to wearing them but his eagerness for the scrolls overcame any hesitation.

“They suit you,” Phoebe said.

He nodded, too absorbed by the parchment now open on the table. “You remembered The Odyssey was my favorite. This is truly Homer’s original copy?” A shiver ran down his spine. It wasn’t every day a man meets his personal deity.

“Yes, it is.” She moved closer, her hair brushing his ear as she leaned over to look at the text with him. Phoebe’s floral scent, the heat of her body skated along his skin, threw his concentration off, something that never happened. If his mind questioned the emotions he thought he once felt for this woman, his body didn’t. Given his age, he thought he could move past physical needs.

Apparently not.

His cock stiffened like that of a hormone-driven teenager in heat. By the way Phoebe squirmed, he’d guess she felt it too. Like in London, when they couldn’t keep their hands off each other.

“Take a look at this passage in its original. You can see why it’s commonly misinterpreted.”
Phoebe’s arm brushed his, sending electric charges exploding beneath his skin.

“The article you published on this created controversy. I was impressed with the argumentation. Now more so. This passage makes interpretation harder, not easier.”

“You’ve followed my work?” Her face beamed with happiness and a soft pride. “I’m glad. I’ve read everything you’ve published, and follow your blog, Found Worlds. You’re making history and culture popular.”

Her praise shot jolts of warmth into his chest. That smile and her soft breasts brushing his arm unlocked the door to his memories. Unbidden, images of naked, sweat-drenched bodies tumbled out. Yes, he’d followed her work, justifying the way he gobbled up her writing as respect of one professional for another. With her next to him, touching him, he had to admit now it wasn’t true. Through her words, he stayed connected to her. And she, him.

Let’s interview!

If you had to sell your book based on one run of dialogue (start quote to end quote), which would it be?

“So we’ll do this together because the only place I can imagine being is with you.”

Did you enjoy writing one scene above all the rest? If so, share.

I did really enjoy writing the scene where Emily gets arrested. I tried to bring so much emotion into that scene, and I guess I’ll find out if I succeeded when the readers let me know!

Tell us about your favorite writing environment. Is it indoors, outdoors, a special room, etc.

On my bed. In my pajamas. With my laptop. I can write anywhere, but this is, by far, my favorite place.

What sources do you use for research?

For the suspense portions, along with the internet, I have scores of books on police procedure, forensics, and building a case. It helps that I’ve been a paralegal for twenty plus years as well, and I have a close friend (more like a brother) who is a former cop.

I used to work for a criminal defense attorney so I have some background into setting up a criminal case. And I’m extremely fortunate to have a really close friend who is a doctor. She can usually answer any medical questions so I don’t have a victim die from something that wouldn’t kill her ordinarily. I want to make my books as realistic as possible so I draw from resources who won’t lead me wrong.

I joke with my friends that I still haven’t used some of their careers yet, but I will eventually get to them in my writing.

It’s time to promo. What is your favorite marketing tool?

This one is so hard to choose because I love social media, but I’m also a huge fan of word of mouth marketing and what I like to call obvious advertising. That’s where I give out book bags with my website on them along with a catchy phrase as well as things I know others will use in public.  Business cards are great, but they’re easy to lose. I prefer to use something I know people will actually utilize because it gets my information in front of more people.

Are your book/books available in audio? In other languages? If so, give us more details about where we can get them and what languages they’re in.

Right now, I have seven books in audio which are available from Audible.com, iTunes, and Amazon. Another book is in narration right now, and Connecting Strangers will be made available, too.

How long have you been writing? How long have you been published?

I’ve been writing since I was sixteen (and that’s as much of my age as I’m going to tell). I’ve been published since 2002, and I’m happy to say that Connecting Strangers is my 50th published work. Several of those fifty are out of publication now, and when I read back over some of them, I see how far I’ve come.

What genre/genres do you prefer to write? Are there other genres you’d like to write in the future?

Once upon a time, I would have told you that I prefer writing paranormal, but over the last year or so, that’s segued to romantic suspense. I’ve written romantic suspense in the past, but, for the most part, I focused on paranormal like vampires. Now, I like creating the drama and suspense, getting inside the head of a creepy killer, and making sure the bad guy gets what’s coming to him.

I’ve always wanted to try young adult, and I did write a novella in that genre. I’m not sure so I could tackle a longer story, though. For now, I think I’ll stick with what I love.

Do you prefer to write short stories, novellas or novels? Why?

Definitely novels. I feel constrained when I’m writing a short story, and I’m always checking my word count to make sure I don’t go over. I recently wrote a novella for Still Hungry For Your Love, a zombie romance anthology, and it was difficult for me knowing when to wrap it up. There were scenes I wanted to put in, but then I worried I’d end up going over word count.

Don’t get me wrong, though. I love writing novellas when I’m in the frame of mind to write them. My entire Spirit series are novellas. The stories just came to me, and I wrote those stories so fast. My novels usually don’t get written so quickly.

Do you write books in series? If so, share a bit about the series you currently have published or are coming soon.

I love writing books in series. I have the Vampires Destined series published, the first two books in the Spirit Series (Souls Divided and Sharing Our Souls) with two more books on the way. I also have the Hot Magic series from Ellora’s Cave.

Connecting Strangers is the first book in the Discovering Emily Series. I’m working on the next book now, and I anticipate at least a third book, maybe even a fourth, along with a novella or two for some secondary characters.

If you could make changes to a story you’ve already written, which would it be and why?

I couldn’t just pick one story because I have several books out there where reviewers have picked up on something missing from the storylines, and I’d love to go back and change them. Unfortunately, if I did that, I wouldn’t have time to write new stores.

Short Excerpt

I close my eyes and slowly squeeze the trigger. The shot sounds so loud I jump backwards. But the bullet hits its mark, tearing a hole through Mark's shoulder. With a curse, he falls to the ground. I know I haven't killed him because he's making so much noise and trying to scramble to his feet. So I snag the keys from the hook by the back door and run.

He'll come after me which means I don’t have much time to get a head start. The mud tries to suck my shoes off, but I clench my toes while Mark’s promise bounces around inside my head.

You’ll always be mine.

At the time, I thought it was romantic, but I was only eighteen. What the hell did I know? It didn’t take me long to learn it meant Mark doesn't take no for an answer. In high school, his determination was a compliment. Nowadays, it would get him arrested...if we didn't live in a town that worshipped him.

Shaking so hard, I have a hard time jabbing the key in the ignition. Relief floods through me when I can finally start the 2000 Volvo my grandmother got me when I graduated from high school seven years ago.

As I gun the engine, I see Mark's reflection in my rearview mirror. He's made it to his feet, and though blood is dripping down the front of his shirt, he’s running after me.

The Volvo kicks up plenty of dust and gravel when I stomp on the accelerator, showering Mark with enough pebbles to bring him to a halt. His loud curses follow me down the old, dirt road where our clapboard home sits. It’s the one his daddy built us once he knew Mark wouldn’t be leaving town anytime soon.

Staying in rural Broomtown, Kentucky definitely hadn't been my choice. That had been all Mark. After my parents died, I wanted to get as far away as possible to start our lives fresh, but Mark, well, he figured since he was going to be trapped in a dead end job once his dreams of playing football were over, he might as well do it around family.

I keep looking in my mirror to make sure he isn't following me, and I don't dare relax until I make it to the highway. Even then, the trembling continues.

Ten miles down the road, I realize I left my purse on the kitchen counter, and I have no money and less than a half a tank of gas. In a car that chugs gas like this one, that isn’t going to get me very far. But anywhere is better than Broomtown with Mark.

A tear trickles down my cheek, and I swipe it away. No more tears. I have cried enough for him. When I was still young and foolish, I thought Mark and I would be together forever. I know now that forever can be a hell of a long time when the love of your life morphs into a raving lunatic.

My heart aches when I think about what we had once. We were the love story everyone dreams about. Me, the head cheerleader, and Mark, the captain of the football team. I still remember the night the Broomtown Broncs won the state championship. No one thought a team from the sticks could win such an important title. Mark had carried me on his shoulder through the cheers and the drums. Then he had to go and do something stupid for a senior prank that changed everything.

I switch on the radio to drown out the memories, but they've always been louder. The thump of the wheels hitting pavement releases some of the pressure in my chest, and my shoulders begin to relax. I might not be free of Mark forever, but tonight I wouldn't have to listen to his drunken complaints.

The Volvo's lone headlight illuminates the long, winding road ahead then bounces off the side of a white car heading in the opposite direction. I wish I could stop the person, warn them where there going. That road dead-ends in Broomtown. Hopefully, the driver doesn’t have plans to stay long. It’s the kind of place that sucks you in and while you’re there, it drains your soul a little piece at a time until you’re moving in slow motion. Just putting one foot in front of the other.

My hand smells like gun powder, and though I wipe them one at a time on my jeans, the smell won’t go away. I still see the blood, too, even though none of it got on me. There’d been a lot of it, though. If I hadn’t seen Mark get up and walk with my own two eyes, I would be worried I’d killed him.

As much as I want to get away from Mark, I couldn’t kill him. It’s certainly not that I love him anymore, but taking a human life just isn’t in me. Hell, taking any life. Mark and his best friend always made fun of me when I wanted to set the mice free from the traps rather than kill them. Mark had better be glad that’s the type of person I am.

Static replaces the low, monotonous voice of the town’s only radio broadcaster. I switch off the sound, and a flash of blue catches my eye in the rearview. I lift my gaze, and my stomach sinks. A cop is behind me, and the blue lights insist I pull over.

Damnit. With one hand, I direct the car over to the side of the road while I reach for my purse that isn't on the passenger seat where I always drop it. Then I remember I left the house without anything but my clothes and keys. Double damn.

I hear the squawk of the cop's radio as he approaches the side of my car. His long, black flashlight taps against the driver's window, and I sigh, knowing the only way out of this is to tell the truth...well, some of it anyway.

Blinking rapidly against the glare of the light, I press the button to lower my window. My gaze tilts upwards and connects with hazel eyes. A sinfully handsome face causes my breath to stall in my chest. The man standing outside the window of my Volvo is a cop, and I should give him the proper respect, but finding my voice proves impossible.

The darkness doesn't allow me much of a view, but it's enough to make my nerves dance. I glance at his full lips and realize they're moving. He's talking to me, and I blink several times in an attempt to regroup. My hand fumbles on the seat next to me.

"I-I'm sorry, Officer. I left my purse at home. I do have a driver's license and insurance, but I was in a hurry. I didn't even think about it, honestly." I babble on for a few more seconds until the cop interrupts in deep, throaty bass.

"Have you been drinking?" He shines the flashlight into the interior, and the beam slides over my denim-clad legs before sliding up my thin t-shirt.  I hadn’t had the time to grab a coat, and as cold as it is outside, it’s no wonder my outfit looks suspicious. His gaze pierces mine again while he waits for my answer.

I attempt to swallow, but the lump in my throat is the victor. "No, I haven't." But I don't blame him for asking.

"Would you step out of the car, please?" He opens the door and takes a step back to give me room.

Trembling, I follow his command, closing the door behind me so I can lean against the coldness of the steel. A gust of frigid wind lifts the hair off the nape of my neck, and the trembles segue to shivers.

The officer drags his gaze back to the interior of my car before fixing it on me again. He’s staring at me, and I don’t like it. I’ve had just about enough of me treating me like I’m a piece of meat. Of course, now isn’t the time to get defensive. Instead, I return his stare, but I have to look up, way up, to face him. "Do you mind telling me why you stopped me?" I silently congratulate myself on the composed question.

He juts his chin toward the front of the Volvo. "You have a headlight out."

If only he could see how relieved I am…Something as simple as a headlight, I can deal with. "Oh, that. Yes, I know. I've been meaning to fix it, but it just keeps slipping my mind. I'm sorry." I lift my shoulders in an apologetic manner, but the stern look on the cop's face remains.

"What's your name?" The look on his face dares me to lie.

"Emily. Emily Murdoch." I accept the challenge by using my mother’s maiden name which is also my middle name.

"Where do you live, Miss Murdoch?"

Shit. The last thing I want is for him to know my real name. Living in Broomtown has taught me that cops cannot be trusted. As gorgeous as this one is, I still won’t let my guard down. I paste an easygoing smile on my face and lie again. "Juniper Springs."

His eyebrows lift, and my heart pounds. Did I say something wrong? Can he tell I'm lying now? "Really?"
I stick to my story, replying with only a stiff nod.

"You mind if I take a look inside your car?"

“Not at all.” I move away from the door and wave my hand as though granting entrance to my minions. What else am I supposed to do? If I said no, he’d have come up with a reason to arrest me. That’s what all cops do.

His concludes his search quickly and straightens to face me. "It's too dangerous to be driving these dark roads with only one headlight, Miss Murdoch. I suggest you get it fixed first thing tomorrow morning." He switches off the flashlight. "Drive safely."

I watch him walk away while my legs threaten to collapse. Once back inside my car, I take in great gulps of air and lean my head back against the rest. But something tells me I shouldn't be relieved. The cop bought my story too easily. Which probably means he didn't just find me by accident.

A sick feeling settles in the pit of my stomach. Mark is already on the hunt.

About the Author

I started writing years ago, and my first attempt was a contemporary romance that will never see the light of day. I think I may even have thrown it away by now. It was absolutely horrific as I knew nothing about well…anything to do with writing.

After that, I started writing fantasy romances about wizards and wizards, and once those took off, I segued to paranormal romances (hello, vampires and ghosts) and romantic suspense.

I also write articles for various magazines, including The Writer’s Journal, Writer’s Magazine, Writer’s Weekly, Writing for Dollars, Absolute Write, Freelance Writing.com, and Funds for Writers.

I’m fortunate to make my home in historical Charleston, South Carolina. Beautiful city. Beautiful people. When I’m not writing, I love to read, watch Bones, Castle, Blue Bloods, and Hawaii Five-O, create videos, keep Target in business, play visitor in my city, and drink lots of coffee.
