What Every Woman Wants Under Her Christmas Tree. Katie O'Sullivan and her fabulous ghosts. Chance to win!

Welcome to my What Every Woman Wants Under Her Christmas Tree blog event! It’s been such a wonderful event thus far I'm considering making it a tradition here at A Writer’s Mind. I think it’s a fabulous way to not only get to know some fantastic authors better but be welcomed inside their ‘homes’ at Christmas as they share their traditions. For those visiting for the first time, this event runs through December 25th and is chock full of some fan-tabulous giveaways!

This weekend is extra special because I get to welcome back the woman who started all of this for me. All of what you ask? Well, before this author visited my blog at the start of this year, I didn’t host blog events! Who is this ‘began it all for me,’ writer you ask? None other than paranormal romance author, Katie O’Sullivan. We’re both thrilled to be able to reunite again at the end of the year and as I’ve told Katie since “Wow, just look what you started!” Katie and I had just met cyber style back in February when I featured her and I’ve got to tell you, I’m so glad! She’s incredibly talented, fun, creative and more importantly, someone I now consider a friend. Interestingly enough, we both live in haunted houses and love swapping stories. We tend to bring a smile to one another’s face I’d say. Yep, we’re weird like that! AND, (this is the really cool part) she lives in Cape Cod, Massachusetts about an hour and a half from me here in New Hampshire! What do you think, did Fate have a hand?

Alright, back to business. After all, I’ve a blog event to host for you. So, without further adieu, let me introduce Katie O’Sullivan, editor for Cape Women Online and romance writer of all things that go 'bump in the night' as well as romantic suspense. Wait a sec! Katie has something to say before the interview. Seems she’d like to put something beneath this blog’s tree for two of you to win. Here she is…“Two lucky people will win copies of my books, winner’s choice of e-book. What a great holiday gift to give yourself – instant gratification and it’s so easy to enter! First: Leave a comment here on A Writer’s Mind and tell us your absolute favorite thing about the Holidays! Then: Click through to Katie’s blog and become a Follower. Good luck and Happy Holidays!”

Thanks Katie from me and my readers, blog followers and friends. Fantastic!

So let’s get to know Katie a bit better…

SKY: Thanks so much for visiting, Katie. It’s a pleasure to have you!

KATIE: Thanks for inviting me back, Sky! It’s so cool that I get to both start and end the year with visits to your blog! I like the symmetry of it all.

SKY: As do I! Before we dive into your books I’d like to first dive into the holidays. What’s your favorite part of Christmas?

KATIE: Favorite part? Oh, where to start! I love everything about Christmas, so it’s hard to narrow down. Caroling, Christmas strolls, candy canes, holiday parties, Mistletoe, Christmas movies, holiday music in the air… it’s so hard to choose just one favorite thing!

Guess my absolute favorite part of the holidays would have to be… baking Christmas cookies with my kids. I love going through the cookbooks and recipes each year, choosing what types of treats to bake and who to give them to. My daughter’s favorites are roll-out sugar cookies she can cut out in shapes and decorate with candies. My sons both favor chocolate chip and m&m varieties – but I think it’s mostly to eat the raw cookie dough!

The best part is being together in the warm kitchen, with Christmas music playing and the scent of cinnamon in the air. To me, Christmas is about traditions, the connections between generations.

I guess the best thing about Christmas is the family moments. The holidays are one big wonderful excuse to make warm fuzzy memories of doing fun things with your kids and relatives!

SKY: Oh, I couldn’t agree more. Jeesh, you mentioned sugar cookies. Just made some with my son. Pretty sure I ate half the batch! Ugh! So, I’m too curious, If you could ask for one thing to be delivered under your Christmas tree this year, what would it be?

KATIE: Hmmm… last year my wish was for a Kindle under my tree, but it fell off Santa’s sleigh somewhere. I did finally get a Nook for my birthday this summer… so maybe this year I’ll wish for a bunch of new e-books to fill it up! A “bunch” is one thing, right?

SKY: LOL, yep, I’d say a bunch is one. I like your way of thinking. *winks* I have to know, if you could give readers one of YOUR heroes under their Christmas tree…which one would he be? Why?

KATIE: My neighbor has already asked me to wrap up Keefe Walker (with a big red bow you know where!) to put under her Christmas tree. Keefe’s the hero of PERFECT STRANGERS, and my neighbor fell in love with him in the very first draft of my story! Tall, blond, sensitive and sexy, with an artist’s sensibilities and temperament but the muscles of someone used to hard work.

SKY: Oh, he sounds perfect! Now, if you could pick one heroine from your stories who would willingly pass out gifts Christmas morn, who would she be? Why?

KATIE: Jane Peterson, the heroine from PERFECT STRANGERS, grew up in foster care. Her parents died when she was young, and one of the things she realizes during the course of the story is how much she really wants a family. I think her first Christmas with Keefe’s large, boisterous clan might be a little overwhelming to her, but she’ll definitely be loving every minute of it.

SKY: Which one of your heroes and/or heroines in your stories would take one look at a Christmas tree and say, “no thank you.” If so, share. Why? It’s okay, we like the bad guys/gals too!

KATIE: Going back to my first book, UNFOLDING THE SHADOWS, I think the character of Kyle Greene – the heroine’s unfaithful husband – was the least interested in holidays and family of any of the characters I’ve penned. Even though he was married and had 3 kids, he was a self-centered bastard with little consideration for those around him.

SKY: Sounds like it! Back to the warm and fuzzies. Share with us the scene (found within any of your stories) that was─ to this day─your favorite to write. Why?

KATIE: LOL, this is a hard question!

From writing classes and talks I’ve attended, it seems most authors consider themselves either “plotters” or “pantsers” – they either plot out their books ahead of time and work from an organized outline, or “fly by the seat of their pants.” I’m a “pantser” all the way – I don’t know where the story is going before I write it! So sometimes I sit down to write one thing and something totally different ends up on the page.

This totally happened in PERFECT STRANGERS, in the scene where the realtor, Brent, first propositions Jane. In an earlier version of this story, it was completely different – longer, drawn out… in a word, boring. I had to hit delete and start over. I love the way it turned out in the end – I feel like you “get” Brent’s character. It’s not a “warm and fuzzy” scene, but those aren’t always my favorites. I like the scenes where the characters discover something about themselves, and the reader gets insight into their motives.

So far, so good. What she’d seen of Cape Cod was beautiful, even in the middle of winter. But this was not where she’d expected to find herself at this point in her life, or her career. Jane reminded herself that everything happens for a reason. The Universe must have some plan for me, she thought. A plan that doesn’t include Dave.

“Earth to Jane,” Brent was saying, snapping his fingers to bring her back from her internal monologue. “I was asking if you had any dinner plans for this evening. I’d love to show you around town some more. That is, if you’re available?”

Jane grimaced. “Oh, I’m available all right,” she said, thinking again about Dave. He still hadn’t called. Then she realized that Brent was asking her out! She quickly back-pedaled. “But I’m not sure that I’m up for a dinner date tonight. I’m afraid I’m too tired to be good company.”

“Hey, I understand. I’m tired, too, after we saw so many properties today. Why don’t I cook something for you back at my place? We could curl up on my leather couch and watch a movie on the flat screen?” He grinned and winked one chocolate brown eye. “I’ll even give you one of my famous Nickerson massages. Guaranteed to relax every muscle in your gorgeous body.”

“Hmm, that sounds lovely, Brent, but I am really tired.” To reinforce the point, Jane yawned widely, stretching one arm toward the ceiling. “Can you just drop me back at the B&B, and I’ll take a rain check on the dinner and massage?”

She saw the scowl pass swiftly over Brent’s features, before it was quickly replaced with a smile. “No problem, baby,” Brent said, sounding casual. “The offer’s good any time.” He turned and walked toward the front of the house, holding the door open for Jane and locking it behind them. He turned and handed her a key on a long metal keychain shaped like a…

Jane thought the keychain looked remarkably phallic. “Oh, it’s the lighthouse from your logo,” she said, finally recognizing it for what it was supposed to be. “Kind of… big for a keychain, don’t you think?”

“It’s so you’ll think of Lighthouse Realty every time you unlock the door,” Brent said, meeting her eyes. He smiled, showing his brilliant smile of perfect white teeth. “And think of me, too, of course.”

Jane stifled her laugh, realizing that giggling probably wasn’t the reaction he was aiming for. She also knew she needed to squash this budding romance before he thought she was truly interested in what he had to offer.

“Look, Brent. I need to tell you something.”

“That you’re head over heels for me already?” he joked, continuing toward the SUV parked in the driveway. “But Jane, we just met this morning. Don’t you think we should wait?”

Jane hesitated. Was she reading something into Brent’s behavior that just wasn’t there? Maybe he was just flirty like this with everyone. She sighed, deciding she should still tell him about Dave. She grabbed his arm gently, and pulled him to a stop beside her on the brick walkway.

“No, seriously. I recently got out of a bad relationship. I thought we were in love and he didn’t. And it all ended badly. I’m not ready to start dating right away, no offense.”

He was quiet for a moment, a thoughtful look on his face. After a long moment, he smiled and took her hand. “Jane, I’m glad you told me. I’m sorry you’ve been hurt. But I feel like we have this real deep-down chemistry at work between us, where we can be honest with one another.”

She nodded, thinking just the opposite. What kind of chemistry class did he take in high school? The only chemical reaction Jane was feeling was the rumbling in her stomach telling her it was almost time for supper.

“I understand if you don’t want a serious relationship,” Brent said, “but I’m sure you could use a friend-with-benefits while you’re here in Chatham. I’m willing to be that friend, anytime you need me.”

Jane’s eyes opened wider, her brain trying to process what he’d just told her. “So, you’re saying you’ll sleep with me? No strings attached? What a… generous offer.” Jane knew that other people made arrangements like this, but it had never occurred to her to line up sex partners whom she wasn’t in love with. She could still count on one hand the number of guys she’d ever slept with in her entire life, and she didn’t think Brent was going to be joining that list any time soon. If ever.

Brent smiled. “See? I knew we were on the same page.” He squeezed her hand, still clasped within his own.

“Uh, I think you’ve got the wrong idea about me,” Jane said, pulling her hand away from him. “Call me old fashioned, but I think there has to be some romance before there’s any sex. I’ve never really been the friends-with-benefits kind of girl.”

Brent took a step back, putting both hands up in the air as if to surrender. “Hey, I’m sorry. I figured if you were friends with my cousin Marcie, you were a party girl like she is. I apologize if I’ve offended you with my assumptions.”

Jane smiled, glad that he’d backed right off. “That’s okay. I’m not really friends with Marcie, we worked together at the newspaper office.”

His eyes widened with surprise. “So you’re that Jane Peterson? The one who was dating Sassy Daniels’s fiancĂ©? Oh, man, I had no idea!”

Everything suddenly seemed darker. “FiancĂ©?” Jane asked, her voice sounding small even to her own ears.

How could that be?

How could Dave spend almost a year dating Jane without popping the question, and in just two weeks be engaged to that other bimbo? Was it because she was blonde? Or rich? Or a pop star? Or better in bed? Or was it some combination thereof?

Jane stopped speculating, realizing that the list of pros to marrying Sassy Daniels was probably way longer than the list of cons. He’d be a fool not to marry her, Jane thought. And I’m a fool to care one way or the other.

SKY: I’m a ‘panster’ all the way too! While I think ahead of time I’m going to plot a novel out…I always tend to toss my best laid plans aside and dive in headfirst. By the way, great excerpt! Now I’m going to make you really think. You must have written a scene in one of your stories you weren’t sure about but you wrote it anyway. AND, you were SO glad you did. What was it? If you had no doubt about any scene you wrote, just say so!

KATIE: There’s a violent scene near the end of UNFOLDING THE SHADOWS that was based on an accident I actually experienced while the story was still a work in progress.

It was one of those days, where I had too many things to do and not enough time and wanted to keep writing. If you’re a writer you know what I mean! I stayed at my computer until the last possible second, and was headed out for a lightning round of errands when the school nurse called to tell me my son was sick and needed to be picked up! Talk about a wrench in the master plan… in my frenetic rush to try to “do it all,” I tripped and crashed my arm through a plate glass window, slashing the hell out of my wrist, blood and glass absolutely everywhere… a trip to the emergency room and 15 stitches taught me to slow down.

A few weeks later, I was writing the confrontation scene between Kyle and Jillian. By this point in the story, Kyle is tipping over the edge of sanity and getting violent. As their argument escalated on the page, I drew on my own recent memories of blood and the searing hot pain as Kyle smashed Jillian’s arms into the plate glass kitchen window, shattering the glass and causing her that same searing pain. As I wrote it, I could feel the glass in my skin – I still had the fresh scars staring up at me from the keyboard. But I kept writing it. Talk about bleeding for your art! In the end, I’m glad I wrote it because the rest of the story flowed from there.

Here’s a famous writing quote attributed to a few different authors, that goes, “There’s nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein.” I laughed the first time I read that, as I felt like I’d already tried that method!

SKY: LOL, that last paragraph made me a chuckle…I know, rather sadistic of me! Still. You’ve a good sense of humor about you. But you touched on something I know is said often to we writers but is so very accurate…write what you know. And Katie, however painful it was *mega ouch* you did just that! (I hope your son was okay too!)

Hmmm, I say we leave off with some sizzle. What do you think? After all, that’s essentially what every girl wants under her Christmas tree (winks). SO, let’s talk hot, hot, hot. Share with us the story─the very scene─that will make every reader at this blog walk away….steamin’ ready, searching out your tale!

KATIE: I love first kiss scenes! They offer a glimpse of things to come, a promise of a deeper connection. One of my favorite scenes in PERFECT STRANGERS is the first bar scene where Jane goes to the local bar on a dare from her best friend to kiss a “perfect stranger.” The heat is smoldering between her and Keefe, when he surprises her with this first kiss…

She leaned closer to him. “You want to get out of here?” she asked. She opened her mouth to say more, and suddenly Keefe leaned down and kissed her. Surprised, Jane started to pull away, but Keefe’s hand was right there around her waist, planted firmly on her back, pressing her closer against his body. His mouth was gentle, grazing her lips, his tongue flickering in only slightly as if to explore.

Her eyes slowly closed as she focused on the softness of his lips and the tenderness of his hand against her back. She felt an unexpected thrill course through her body, zinging from where his lips locked with hers straight down to her toes, leaving all of her nerves tingling with anticipation.

As she started to respond more completely to his kiss, he became more insistent, pressing his mouth more firmly to hers. The kiss went from warm to blazing hot in mere seconds. The pounding of her own heart drowned out all the noises from the bar crowd around them – nothing else existed or mattered except for the two of them. The kiss was all she could think of, her mouth becoming just as insistent as his. She wrapped her arms around his neck, feeling as if her body was burning up but craving the heat. Needing it. Wanting more.

He drew his lips from hers, feathering kisses along her cheek as his mouth made its way toward her ear. The stubble on his cheeks scratched a path that sent lightning shivers running through her. His hand grazed her breast as it moved up to twist in her hair. She let out a low moan as she felt his hot breath in her ear. “You said you were ready to leave?” he whispered before pulling his head away to look into her eyes. She nodded mutely. “Let’s go,” he said.

SKY: *swooning sigh* Well done. And again I agree, the first kiss is the ‘tell all’ of how a romance will unravel. However, there’s nothing quite like a ‘beyond the first kiss’ sweeter than sweet ending at this time of year. If you could leave ONE of your tales under your reader’s Christmas tree because it’s your personal favorite, what is it and why are you leaving it? If it’s the same story as your steamin’ hot story, I’m sure we all agree, that’s okay too!

KATIE:  Of my two novels, UNFOLDING THE SHADOWS is still my favorite, partly because I’m in the midst of writing the follow-up story! Jillian and Jake don’t get any love scenes in the first book – I don’t even think they get a first kiss! – because she’s still married to her cruel and controlling husband. I’m trying to make up for that in the second book. There are more ghosts to meet, and mysteries to unravel, but Jake and Jillian find time to steal kisses… and sometimes more. Here’s an excerpt from early in the story.

Although her twins seemed unfazed by the strange spirit they’d seen in the driveway, Jillian was troubled. It was the first time one of the spirits she’d spoken with in session had followed her to her home. Why hadn’t the ghost manifested itself directly to her instead of the children? Could the twins’ powers be growing so fast that they were attracting untethered spirits?

Jillian shook her head, puzzled. She’d have to consult with her grandmother to see if such a thing was even possible. “I wonder who she was?” she mused out loud.

“Who are we talking about?” said a voice close to her ear. Jillian whirled to find Jake standing there.

Her hand flew to her chest, feeling her heart pound as she tried to steady her breathing. “Jake! You scared me!” He grinned, and she felt her heart beat even faster as his sexy smile widened. At times, she still couldn’t believe that this passionate hunk was in love with her. Eight months together as a couple and still going strong. Despite what he called her psychic illogicality.

On some level, Jake believed in the ghosts who whispered to Jillian and her children. He’d had enough interactions with Jillian’s spirit world to believe she was telling the truth, but the whole concept didn’t make sense to him. As an artist, he wasn’t a black-and-white thinker. He was able to take the leap of faith needed to know Jillian wasn’t crazy, but he didn’t completely understand what she did or how she did it.

He put his arms around her waist, pulling her close. Her stomach muscles clenched as a surge of warmth rushed through her body like lightning, her arms snaking around his muscled torso to return the embrace.

For a second, the crowds around them melted away into silence, as if she and Jake were alone in an empty field. She stared into the grey depths of his eyes seeing the love and compassion within before her gaze traveled lower, resting on his mouth.

His lips were slightly parted, his breath warm and sweet. She tipped her chin up to meet him as he lowered his mouth to hers for a soft kiss, their lips meshing together in perfect harmony. She pressed her body more closely against his, feeling the strength and support he offered as she relaxed into the embrace, but also sensing the passion simmering just under the surface.

What Every Woman Wants Under Her Christmas Tree. Michele Hart's Shape-Shifters! Chance to win big!

Welcome to my What Every Woman Wants Under Her Christmas Tree blog event! So far it’s been an absolute blast. Just arriving at this blog for the first time? If so, this event runs through December 25th . Expect to see a festive slew of incredibly talented authors and a truly superb jewelry artisan. I highly recommend you browse through the last few posts to learn more about authors such as Melissa Mayhue and Catherine Bybee.

This week I’m totally thrilled to welcome back award-winning, multi-genre romance author, Michele Hart. When it comes to sci-fi, fantasy romance, action and adventure, Hart’s a cut above the rest! Michele’s decided she’d like to put an Ecopy of her Sci-fi romantic suspense, Mind-Blown under this blog’s Christmas tree. We all know whatever’s put beneath the tree is up for grabs. As there’s only one fantastic copy available I’m going to host a contest. Answer the following question in a comment at this blog for a chance to win. In Mind-Blown, Jon and Holly decide to sabotage what? Click HERE to locate the answer.

Okay, time to get to know Michele better...

SKY: Thanks so much for visiting. It’s a pleasure to have you!

MICHELE: I’m very glad to be here, Sky. Thanks for the invitation to talk about my latest Sci-Fi Romantic Adventure, Luminous Nights. Fun’s always happening on your blog!

SKY: You’re very welcome! Before we dive into your book, I’d like to first dive into the holidays. What’s your favorite part of Christmas?

MICHELE: Leftovers for days. And Christmas lights.

SKY: I hear ya sista, nothing like those holiday leftovers! If you could ask for one thing to be delivered under your Christmas tree this year, what would it be?

MICHELE: A friend I lost in the last few months, but Santa doesn’t do that kind of work.

SKY: Oh, I’m so sorry. It’s never easy to lose someone. Know that my thoughts are with you.

If you could give readers one of YOUR heroes under their Christmas tree…which one would it be? Why?

MICHELE: Jack, the hero from Luminous Nights, will always be the dream man I’d love to clone and give away to readers. He’s always on top of things, has tricks up his sleeve, is forever up to something, and is too darn sexy to be bound to just one planet. He’s hard to label whether he is a very good bad boy or a very bad good boy. That’s part of the mystery in Jack.

SKY: He sounds scrumptious. If you could pick one heroine from your stories who would willingly pass out gifts Christmas morn, who would she be? Why?

MICHELE: All my girls would be glad to play Mommy Christmas, but I think Crystal, the heroine from The Consecration, would best fill the role as she’s the matriarch of several generations of magicians and shapeshifters. Although, they would celebrate Christmas as remnants of their long-past lives on mortal Earth. And why not? Christmas is fun.

SKY: Which one of your heroes and/or heroines in your stories would take one look at a Christmas tree and say, “no thank you.” If so, share. Why? It’s okay, we like the bad guys/gals too!

MICHELE: I don’t think any of my heroes or heroines would say “no thank you” to a Christmas tree. The tree is the best part of the season for me—peaceful, reflective, beautiful--so naturally my heroes and heroines like nice Christmas trees, too. Christmas trees are fun, and I don’t want to write a hero or a heroine who isn’t fun, who wouldn’t love a Christmas tree. The bad guys? None of them would like Christmas trees because they are no fun!

SKY: Your characters sound right up my alley. Back to the warm and fuzzies. Share with us the scene in Luminous Nights that was─to this day─your favorite to write. Why?

MICHELE: This was one of my most spontaneous scenes. I’d been eating Hershey’s Raspberry Chocolate when I wrote it. It’s a shame I don’t have room to show you the chocolate parts—there are many in the book--but here’s the raspberry part:

WARNING: This steamy excerpt has shivering nakedness, unspoken lust, and hands everywhere--and I mean, everywhere! Definitely R-rated material.

The Naughty Artist in Jack – An Excerpt from Luminous Nights

“I want to draw on you,” Jack told Rachel.

“Draw on me?”

She watched him take up the bowl of raspberries and mash them with the spoon. “Yes. Didn’t you say you liked my artwork? I’ve an urge to draw. You must lie down, and let me draw on you.”

“Draw on me…?”

“You’d called me a fairly good artist, remember…”

It had been an understatement meant to contain his swelling ego. He was a very good artist.

Done with his mashing, he went to work, removing the sleeves of Rachel’s techsuit and separating the top from the bottom at her waist. She giggled when he guided her onto her back and propped her back and head up with pillows.

Entertained, she watched him sit between her knees and unzip the front of her techsuit top, leaving it open in the middle just a little and folding back the top and bottom, exposing wide views of her cleavage and her stomach but still concealing her breasts.

“This is the price I must pay for your assistance?”

“Is this too easy for you? It’ll not remain this easy. Things will get harder.”

She sputtered a laugh at his double entendre, saw where this was leading, and it made her nervous. Was she about to trade sex for his support? She hadn’t prepared herself for it. In consideration of the Sodasi’s lives, she saw it as a small price to pay. She was willing to make any deal to help these children, no matter how distasteful.

But then again, the consideration of intimacies with him brought back all the pleasure of his chocolate kiss.

“You must mean more difficult.”

His smile caught fire. “No, I meant harder.”

She rolled her eyes and chewed on her lip, forever lost now.

Rachel thrilled to the sight of him bare-chested and sitting back on his ankles between her legs. He dipped his finger into the berry juice and began to draw little swirls around her belly button, then swirls and curves across her stomach until she giggled aloud. His tantalized smile turned her on entirely. She couldn’t remember when a man’s smile moved her heart so. His touch tickled, setting her body to a sizzling simmer no cold breeze could cut.

“What are you drawing?” she asked, feeling the flesh under his finger rise to his slow and flirting summons.

“I’m decorating your soul with little curls to highlight the most beautiful parts of you,” Jack’s silky voice replied around his deliberate smile, reloading his drawing finger with berry juice and sending his caress into a slow dance over her stomach, then setting swirls down to her sides, tickling her again.

“The berry juice will stain your lily-white skin,” he explained. “And tomorrow I’ll gain dirty pleasure knowing my artwork is under your clothes, and no one will know about it but us.”

Rachel laughed again, enjoying his fantasy. “Make it pretty, if it’s going to last a while.”

His nod was enthusiastic, and his drawing finger danced a slow ballet down her arm like an ice skater on a frozen pond. “You’ll be my masterpiece.”

She giggled, and he snickered as he dipped his finger into the berry ink and drew to his heart’s content, painting reddish-purplish swirls on her bare arms. His attention to every berry smear was authentic, putting thought, balance, and design into his pattern.

The scintillation of his touch made her nipples stiffen through the techsuit material shielding her breasts. He allowed himself to be stolen away from his project to gaze at her breasts, the rise and fall of her quickened breath, as though he hungered and she were a buffet. Then he went back to his artwork. His self-discipline was remarkable.

When he’d fully decorated both her arms with the juice of the mashed berries, he softly fingered the hollow in her throat.

“I’m going to draw jewelry on you.”

Jack reloaded his fingertip with his berry ink, and he drew a necklace painfully slow, achingly light, elaborate with swirls around her throat, and Rachel closed her eyes, relishing his kinetic touch. His dilatory caress sent her body’s awareness wild. She felt her breath quicken again. She couldn’t remember ever feeling this way before, titillated to a man’s command.

He drew the top of the techsuit away, sliding the material from her bosom, causing another stimulation when the cooler air reached them. He found the front hook of her bra, and slowly peeled it away from her breasts. At first, his eyes transfixed on her naked bosom, and she thought this was the moment he’d take his reward. She hoped she wasn’t visibly shaking.

He wet his lips, then he began to finger-paint swirls over the swell of her breasts sending ripples of tension rocking her. He stroked her nipple with spiral swirls of berry juice with the lightest of touch, and she felt the emptiness of her body, the sizzling want of him he raised in her.

One arm holding him up over her, he reloaded the juice and swirled his wet fingertip over her other breast, bringing it to taut attention. She imagined his mouth there, wanted to know how his tongue would feel stroking her as his finger did. She watched him paint squigglies and swirls, tying up her body into knots of tension until she wanted to scream. She had to remind herself again to breathe. A moan rose from her she couldn’t suppress.

Jack reached for the zipper of her pants, and her hand moved to stop him, far more from reflex than the lack of wanting his touch.

“I want to paint your legs. ’Tis my fantasy, Rachel. Do you not trust me?”

Oddly, weirdly, strangely, yes. She did trust him. With her body. She acquiesced since his fantasy felt so good.

He unzipped her techsuit pants and slid the cloth from her body, freeing her of her remaining clothes, leaving her wearing nothing but a thin pair of panties.

He moved downward, dipped his finger into the berry mash, and continued to draw swirls and spirals over her hips, slipping his finger under the waistband of her panties and drawing there, too, but missing the part of her she thought would be the main attraction.

Then he shifted downward and drew on the left side of her left leg all the way to her feet, drawing anklets, even toe rings. Then he moved to her right side and drew the dilatory swirls and spirals up the right side of her right leg, keeping the tension in her strung tight and approaching her breaking point.

Then he moved to her feet again. The anxiety thumped in her chest. All that was left undecorated was the insides of her legs. Was he going to…?

With his bad-boy grin, he dipped his finger into the berries, and began at her ankles again, tracing designs slowly up the inside of her legs. His touch caused tingles coming out in girlish giggles. His lazy painting finger rose up her thighs in swirls, a bit higher every time, but purposely avoiding the apex of her womanhood and teasing her. His touch already sent her body to mindless absorption, but now he sent lightning through her, shocking tender flesh. She felt shivers radiating through her, felt the wetness of her reaction. She both dreaded and hungered for his touch there. And then, more hungered than dreaded. He systematically built her need of him.

When he’d drawn all over her, Jack sat back upon his ankles, his eyes filled with some unnamable feeling potent as he gazed down upon her.

“Rachel,” he muttered, his light vision reflecting the firelight. He put his hand over his chest and forced a deeper breath. “Rachel, you look like an Aztec goddess.”

He’d dealt the blow. Rachel was on fire, her body throbbing along with her heartbeat, wanting him more than she’d ever wanted any man. His touch made her feel titillation and appetite as she’d never felt before. She endured an ache in the core of her she wanted him to fill.

He smiled brightly down on her. “I like the look of you with my fingerprints all over your body. You’re a very beautiful woman, Rachel Marie. I could look upon you for years and never tire of your beauty.”

His words caused another flush to pass over her. It was a sweet thing to say, and he sounded sincere when he said it. True or not, the honeyed words made her want him more.

The smile slid down his face, and he gazed down to her for a moment more without saying a word. He wanted her. Or merely wanted to have sex with her.

He set the bowl of berry juice aside, and he stretched out next to her, propped his head on one bent arm, and smiled again. “I have to let you dry.”

“Shame. I’m so wet.”

“I told you it would get harder.”

Rachel held back a moan but felt it through her body.

Testing several of the last swirls for dryness and discovering them set, he took her into his arms and pressed her naked against him for the longest time. Her breasts mashed against his bare chest made her body suffer for him. He’d halted his seduction of her.

“Why did you stop?”

SKY: Great excerpt! Now I’m going to make you really think. You must have written a scene in LN you weren’t sure about but you wrote it anyway. AND, you were SO glad you did. What was it? If you had no doubt about any scene you wrote, just say so!

MICHELE: That one’s easy to answer. This scene was added after the book had been bought. Just as you said, I had no idea why I was writing it, but as the scene blossomed and added to the story, it opened up a whole new door in my head to Jack. He possesses many amazing skills, and after writing this scene, I realized all his skills boiled down to one extreme talent, so this one scene had taught me a great deal about the entire story. And its upcoming sequel, Vigilant.

WARNING: This excerpt has violence, a near miracle, nasty attitudes, prison-mouth, and a mysterious hero to save the day. An R to some, PG-13 to others.

The Whip – An Excerpt from Luminous Nights

Spun around in her bindings tied above her head, Rachel focused on Jack observing his former cellmates shooting dice near the hall’s great hearth. The traitor. It was like he hardly noticed her strung up for a lashing, his prison buddies looking forward to her vicious flogging. Heartlessly calm and detached, he intermittently checked the currently inactive scene of her soon torture, not very interested.

“Jack…” she called out to him. He cast a lazy look her way.

“If Quattro beats me, you can’t use me the way you want to in the mountains.”

“What makes you think stripes on your back would stop me?”

God, she hoped Jack was bluffing. She really couldn’t tell if he were a good guy or a bad guy. Was it okay with him to assault her in the woods while she was wounded? She shuddered.

Jack rose from his table, abandoning his meal. His sight burned into hers, risk in his holographic sky-blue eyes. A low-grade anxiety pulsed through her. He sashayed over to where Quattro had left the whip on the floor behind her.

“You want to see her punished, Quattro?” Jack brushed the dust from his hands.

“I insist upon it,” the mobster replied.

“Do you want her frightened?” Jack picked the whip up, suddenly too attracted to it.

Quattro’s gross grin rose. “I want to hear her shriek in terror and fear me, you, and every man here.”

Rachel was well on her way to all that. She feared every sadistic criminal in the room, but Jack. And he was fixing that right now. She stiffened to keep from shaking. She watched Jack pull the lash through his hand as if he appreciated the braid…or measured it. Others took notice. He took another step back, nonchalantly taking a position. Her heart pumped harder, and her breath quickened. He wasn’t going to do it, was he…going to beat her?

“Hold still, Rachel…” he said low, getting a feel for the grip. She mashed herself against the wall in dread of the lash.

Then Jack reared back and struck. The whip loudly snapped so close to her back, she felt the ripple in the air through the thin cotton of her techsuit. Rachel felt a shocking sting shoot through her body, and she shrieked. But she hadn’t felt the whip dig into her flesh.
“You bastard!” she shouted at him, awaiting the agony and so fearful of the pain, she nearly started to weep. “I swear to God, I’ll find a way to kill you for this!”

Her terror thrilled Quattro so much, he applauded.

“You’re a passivist, Rachel Marie,” Jack said, berating her. “You can’t kill a thing.”

She couldn’t yet feel the pain, though she didn’t think the hall cold enough to truly numb her from the agony of a lash. She opened her eyes and watched Jack’s audience grow. Where was the pain?

Jack reared back with the whip again. Rachel pinched her eyes shut and screamed in terror again, certain he wouldn’t miss a second time. The strike ripped the material of the techsuit down her back. Except for blood-curdling horror and a puff of slapped air, she felt no physical pain or even any contact. The second strike caused the audience to cheer.

A third strike still brought out her terrified cry and more of Quattro’s acclamation. The leather braid never met her back. Of course, it didn’t. Jack hadn’t missed a shot since he was twelve. If he missed the shot, it was because he meant to miss.

Bets started going down to see how many stripes she’d last.

Jack halted the entertainment cold, staring at them. She didn’t know what he was thinking. She wondered if he thought them vacant, psychotic souls, if he wanted to burn their hearts out with the laser gun strapped to his thigh. He broke away from some tormenting theme of thought, and began to roll the whip. Thinking the bloodsport over too early, the malicious crowd found other things to distract them, their breakfasts, games of dice.

“Quattro,” Jack bothered to finally say something as he coiled the whip and tied it, “beating her for an audience of your enemies isn’t such a good move, though I’m sure it would conjure a wicked orgasm for you and your men. If you torture her before your enemy, she becomes a hero. If you kill her, she becomes a martyr. Heroes and martyrs fuel rebellion. You may start a fire you can’t contain.”

Rachel caught up with her racing breath. The panic attack slowly eased. The sweat risen from her body in fear of supersized agony made her colder.

“You got the fear and loathing from her you wanted, the juicy fear and loathing,” Jack told him, “so let my property go.”

Realizing Jack hadn’t beaten her at all when her back wasn’t bleeding, Quattro was stopped cold by a thought. The hovercraft the gangster sat upon gave a spit. “You can’t possibly think I should let the insolent bitch go without a serious blooding, do you?”

“You should care more that your beds aren’t razed by blue armies. You’re done with her.”

“Your first fuck in the free worlds hasn’t softened your black heart, has it?”

Jack rolled stunning, digitally perfect blue eyes.

“For as many men as I’ve seen you kill, you’re not much of a woman-beater. You’re already softer than you were in prison.”

Jack paused. Quattro hit a raw nerve. Rachel wished she knew his thoughts.

“I have more control than you,” Jack told him with a dead-eyed stare, his finger in the gangster’s face. “Don’t mistake that for weakness. I have control of everything in this room.”

The statement shut Quattro’s foul drunken mouth.

“You’re very reckless today.” Jack passed him the whip.

“She’s not getting any more punishment than she just got,” Jack told him. “If I allow you to beat her, she’ll never survive the mountains with me for my purpose. She pilots the only ship around capable of traveling the wormhole in one piece. Leave her correction to me. I’ll make her want to die. Release my property, now that you’ve gotten your rocks off seeing her terrorized. That’s all you required.”

“I hope she cuts your throat in the middle of the night.”

“If you couldn’t get the job done after five years of trying, she can’t.”

“You sleep with your eyes open.”

Rachel watched Jack. He was magical. He knew just what to say to make Quattro do his bidding, the cold timing required, and the guts and confidence to pull it off, not to mention his dead-on aim. He was impressive.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Later, she had to know…

“What were you thinking when you were staging my beating and watching your audience thrill to the show?”

Jack surveyed the west mountains with the binoculars, and then the sea line. Rachel considered he might not answer the question until he replied, “I was thinking of how I wanted to kill all the sick degenerates for getting off on a weaker creature’s fear and pain.”

At the time, he’d looked like murder was on his mind.

Maybe that’s what happens to a good man’s soul when he serves time in Hell. He becomes the cold executioner.

How would she stop this avenging angel’s killing spree?

SKY: I say we leave off with some sizzle. What do you think? After all, that’s essentially what every girl wants under her Christmas tree (winks). SO, let’s talk hot, hot, hot. Share with us the story─the very scene─that will make every reader at this blog walk away….steamin’ ready, searching out your tale!

MICHELE: First kisses are important, wouldn’t you say? A first kiss is a make-or-break situation in real life and fiction. It better have heat and punch. It’s what brings you back.

Here’s Jack and Rachel’s first kiss:

WARNING: Forget the warning! Dive in!

Thought Stopper – An Excerpt from Luminous Nights

“I’m not authorized to hand itineraries to every slick, badge-waving power jerk who boards my ship.”

Jack’s fake sky-blue eyes sparkled from the insults. “So you think I’m slick?”

Rachel’s brow dived into her sight, and she thought his bulletproof pursuit of her cute, but she couldn’t let him know that. It was a sure bet the number of his bedpost notches constituted a furniture mauling.

“Get over yourself, Marshal. If you’ll excuse me, some of us have to work for a living.”

Jack propped a combat boot against the galley entrance, preventing her exit.

“Don’t brush me off so quickly, Rachel. You don’t know what I’m willing to barter for that itinerary and the name of Xerxes’s contact on Desmonda Station.”

Looking into his handsome holographic face, she became interested in hearing his enticements for its entertainment value. “What do you have to barter that I’d be interested in?”

“How about that surrender you requested?”

“I thought you never surrender, Marshal.”

“I had less of a technical surrender in mind than a custodial transfer of my physical self into your private servitude, prepared to take on missions of erotic nature.”

She couldn’t stifle her smile. “Private servitude. I could have you wash my windows.”

“My better skills concentrate in the bedroom.”

“Oh, yes…missions of erotic nature.”

Not the slightest bit disarmed by her mocking tone, Jack reached out and tugged the zipper of her techsuit down achingly slow past her cleavage to her bra. He gave her his weaponized eyes of blue laser, powerful enough to break any woman’s will. Then he bit his bottom lip as though relishing the temptation of climbing into her techsuit with her. It was a lethal combination. Her blood surged through her body at the application of it.

“Do you often offer yourself as a reward for evidence?”

“This is my first time. Does it show?”

“Not at all. What makes you think I’d find value in your private servitude, Marshal? Enough value to break the law?”

His hypnotic eyes twinkled, took her over, and lingered a bit too long. “I can set a fire on Pluto. I’ll melt an iceberg like you.”

He did set her to a simmer with his eyes and voice alone. She hadn’t reacted to a man like that in a long time. And she knew better than to let it happen. But Jack was a beguiling kind of fun. She couldn’t resist playing along.

“I don’t think you can…” she teased in a dilatory, cold challenge, brushing his shoulder of lint from his white shirt, “melt an iceberg…like me.”

Jack’s hand rose to her cheek and slipped into her hair. She was stunned to respond, having underestimated his hubris. She’d thought his threat an empty one. The stroke of his thumb against her cheek robbed her of her nerve. The will to protest his intimate contact fled her.

Her thoughts stopped at the silent command of his sky eyes. The masculine smell of him urged her obedience.

Before she could step away, he brought her to his mouth and, with a half-second’s pause, Jack kissed her gently. His free hand at her back, he pressed her against his big, warm body, and he deepened the contact into a softly invasive kiss of restraint and quiet passion instead of a harder kiss more physically driven. The unexpected tenderness sent an awakening burn through her, giving her a full-body sizzle, something she’d never felt. She didn’t want his unwanted kiss to end.

When he released her, she reminded herself to breathe, to retake possession of her mental faculties. She was close to a sweat. If he’d kissed her any longer, she’d have needed to shed her clothes to keep them from catching fire. The places his hot hands had been were now cold without them. Rachel thought her knees would buckle.

Jack was right. He could set a fire on Pluto.

SKY: Very, very nice! But there’s nothing quite like a sweet ending at this time of year. If you could leave ONE of your tales under your reader’s Christmas tree because it’s your personal favorite, what is it and why are you leaving it? If it’s the same story as your steamin’ hot story, I’m sure we all agree, that’s okay too!

MICHELE: I’d leave Luminous Nights wrapped in pretty shiny paper with a big, fat bow. First written a decade ago, it’s still the sexiest, most fun and peril-packed adventure I’ve done. It’s a very special book to me. I’ve written a lot of heroes since Jack, but none better, more thrilling or dangerous.

If you like prison breaks, alien chocolate seduction, super weapons, doomsday devices, explosions, abduction, narrow escapes, murder-defying deceit, and threats of genocide, all while riding a harrowing roller coaster with a dangerous man wearing a holographic mask, check out Luminous Nights!

SKY: Thanks so much for joining me this holiday season!

MICHELE: Thank you, Sky. It’s always a pleasure to stop by your place.

What Every Woman Wants Under Her Christmas Tree. Catherine Bybee's Highlanders! Chance to win big!

Welcome to my What Every Woman Wants Under Her Christmas Tree blog event. For those of you visiting for the first time, this event runs through December 25th and hosts a variety of talented authors and a beyond spectacular jewelry artisan.

This week it’s my pleasure to introduce talented paranormal romance author Catherine Bybee. Funny thing, I was browsing Amazon and Catherine’s novels popped up in my search. Wow! How had a missed her? So I instantly bought a few of her books. Had to! She covers everything in a novel that’s right up my alley. Fantasy, time-travel, sexy Highlanders. And it gets even more interesting. Why? We write for the same publisher, The Wild Rose Press! I know what you’re thinking. Sky, were you having a blond moment? Nope. Just a… “this is too good to be true” moment! Long story short, even though I had only started one of her stories I just knew Catherine had to be part of my Christmas blog event. I really wanted to give you all a wonderful experience and well…I knew Catherine would only be a boon.

While I only have Catherine for a few days, she was gracious enough to offer a giveaway. What’s up for grabs? An Ecopy of Binding Vows! How do you enter to win? Easy enough. Answer the following question in a comment. In Binding Vows, what was Tara wearing when she stormed away from the keep? (Hint: Click HERE to locate the answer)

Okay, time to have some fun and get to know Catherine a wee bit better.

SKY: Thanks so much for visiting. It’s a pleasure to have you!

CATHERINE: Thanks for having me.

SKY: Before we dive into your books I’d like to first dive into the holidays. What’s your favorite part of Christmas?

CATHERINE: Family. Without getting together with my family and enjoying (and annoying) my family the entire season would be lost on me. We tend to make it a 2-3 day event.

SKY:  I couldn't agree more. Family is where it's at. I'm curious, if you could ask for one thing to be delivered under your Christmas tree this year, what would it be?

CATHERINE: In my fantasy world, I’d ask for everyone to be in good health. But life doesn’t work that way… so for the kid in me who I’m going to say a big fat contract with a check behind it. A big check. LOL

SKY:  Gotta agree with that as well! Now, if you could give readers one of YOUR heroes under their Christmas tree…which one would it be? Why?

CATHERINE: I think it would have to be Fin MacCoinnich, who is the brother of the hero in Binding Vows. His debut isn’t until January in Redeeming Vow. As for why? Well, Fin is everything a strapping Highlander should be with enough sass and spunk to make all the women smile. He isn’t the brooding type and for Christmas, we need a sparkling smile that delivers.

SKY: If you could pick one heroine from your stories who would willingly pass out gifts Christmas morn, who would she be? Why?

CATHERINE: Myra MacCoinnich, the heroine from Silent Vows. She’s kind, soft spoken and has this awesome gift of being able to move things with her mind. She wouldn’t even have to get out of the big chair to hand out presents.

SKY: Which one of your heroes and/or heroines in your stories would take one look at a Christmas tree and say, “no thank you.” If so, share. Why? It’s okay, we like the bad guys/gals too!

CATHERINE: Todd Blakely, my cynical hero from Silent Vows has an aversion to Christmas. As for why… I hate giving away spoilers so you’ll have to read the book to find out.

SKY: Back to the warm and fuzzy’s. Share with us the scene (found within any of your stories) that was─ to this day─your favorite to write. Why?

CATHERINE: Here is the excerpt fro Redeeming Vows (Release is this Jan 2011 from The Wild Rose Press)

Her next two punches came fast, unexpected, one catching him hard on the jaw. And it hurt. His brow rose. The muscles straining on her arms held surprising strength.

Fin sent his foot out to trip her.

She avoided it and waved him toward her. "Come on, Fin. Stop playing." He turned his back to her, heard her approach, and swept her off her feet...Within ten minutes, they were both panting. Liz's punch wavered. Fin caught her fist and pulled it behind her back and her firmly up against his chest. Her breasts heaved, and her breathing strained. The soft curves of her body pressed to his. Liz reached up to the arm he used to hold her and called her Druid powers. Fin felt his skin burn under her touch...

"Not fair, lass."

"Ever hear the term, all's fair in love and war?"

Aye, well, what were they?

When she came at him again he ducked, taking her down to the floor and grabbed her hands and stretched them above her head where she couldn't apply any fire or heat because her fingertips weren't touching him. Her eyes met his, his body heavy on top of hers, keeping her from moving. But this closeness, this contact was torture.

Elizabeth's gaze traveled to his lips dancing dangerously close to hers. He smelled the sweet scent of her breath, knew without a doubt she desired his taste as much as he did hers. He knew that taste, had it once before, briefly. Wanted it even more now.

"You're quite a workout," she breathed the words to him, lifted her lips a tad closer.

"As are you."

They lay there, staring at each other, neither willing to make the first move. Stubborn.

As for why this is my favorite – well, the tension and desire between these two characters has been building for two books. You get a slight glimpse of Lizzy and Fin at the end of Binding Vows and it isn’t until the third book that these two come together. Keeping tension building for books on end is a bunch of fun and boy, when they come together… it’s fireworks.

SKY:  Delicious excerpt. Thanks for sharing! Now I’m going to make you really think. You must have written a scene in one of your stories you weren’t sure about but you wrote it anyway. AND, you were so glad you did. What was it?

CATHERINE: I really didn’t doubt any scene… but I did doubt a whole story. Kilt Worthy is a first person erotic short story that I wasn’t sure I had the talent to write. Because it is erotic, I’ll avoid adding an excerpt here. Let’s just say that in writing Kilt Worthy, I grew as a writer and my steamy scenes have grown because of this experience.

CATHERINE: - Because I love Fin and Lizzy so much I’ll share pent up scene that takes place half way through Silent Vows – Fin and Lizzy are arguing over Fin’s desire to take Simon, Lizzy’s son, to the village.

Without taking her eyes away from his, she said to Simon, “Can you give us a few minutes, sport. Fin and I need to talk.”

Once he left, she bit out, “You’re full of shit, you know that?”

“If that’s what you choose to believe.”

“It isn’t what I choose. It’s crap! All of it. I won’t have my son living life thinking women are the weaker sex just because we don’t have that thing dangling between our legs.”

“Is that so?” He made his advance slowly, one step at a time until the heat of his body met hers.

Liz held her ground, refusing to be intimidated.

“It isn’t our sex that makes us stronger, Elizabeth, it is us. The sooner you see that the better off for everyone.”

Her eyes twitched, a slightly nervous tick she had when she was unbalanced and damn if Fin didn’t take notice of it. He cast her a cocky grin, evidence he knew he was getting under her skin.
Drawing her shoulders back, she took a deep breath. “I could have you on the floor in seconds, MacCoinnich, so don’t tempt me.”

“In your dreams, lass,” he challenged, his frame nearly touching hers.

Without thought, Liz brought her knee up. But she didn’t have the edge of surprise, and Fin dodged her blow with ease.

Her anger went to her hands, reaching for him in another aggressive move. He pinned her flailing hands in his grip leaving her useless and incapable of moving. His body pressed up against hers preventing her from doing anything.

Anger for anger. Stare for stare. Their breath mixed as they glared at each other.

His triumphant stance wavered. Her breath hitched when his grin slowly faded. They stood too close. Little fluttering waves of pent up desire blossomed and took root. She needed to back off before either of them did something they would regret.

But she was too late.

“God’s teeth,” he murmured right as his mouth reached for hers.

Bittersweet was his taste. Spice and honey mixed with vinegar. He probed her mouth, she gasped in surprise. He took advantage and slipped his tongue inside.

Where the hell had this seduction come from? Why couldn’t she tear herself away? Even now her body betrayed her mind when she melted into him.

Fin let loose her hands. Once unbound, she thrust them through the panel of his shirt, needing to feel the smooth texture of his skin under her fingertips. Her fingers fanned up and clutched his shirt.

A bomb wouldn’t have broken them apart, seconds passed, minutes, both of them engulfed in a passion which had simmered just below the surface for months.

When a small voice, sounding shocked and concerned, penetrated the silence, they separated. “So are we going or what?” Simon’s pre-teen attitude came across loud and clear.

Liz swiveled away to stare at Simon. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Fin watching her every move. She needed to catch her breath.

Simon stood with his hands on his hips. “Well?”

“Get your coat.” Fin told him.

Simon didn’t waste any time before he ran off to the house.

“But...”

“No buts. You win,” Fin said, then went over to the tack room and grabbed a saddle for another horse. “You’re riding with me,” he told her.

SKY: Nice. Another top-notch excerpt! However, there’s nothing quite like a sweet ending at this time of year. If you could leave ONE of your tales under your reader’s Christmas tree because it’s your personal favorite, what is it and why are you leaving it? If it’s the same story as your steamin’ hot story, I’m sure we all agree, that’s okay too!

CATHERINE: I’d leave Binding Vows. It is the book of my heart, and it started the trilogy that I love so much.

SKY: Thanks so much for joining me this holiday season!

What Every Woman Wants Under her Christmas Tree. Melissa Mayhue's Highlanders! Three autographed novels up for grabs!

It’s finally that time! Today marks the beginning of my What Every Woman Wants Under her Christmas Tree blog event. What does this mean? Four weeks worth of fabulous authors, talented jewelry artists and tons of giveaways!

This week it’s my pleasure to introduce award-winning paranormal romance author, Melissa Mayhue. I’m thrilled to announce that Melissa has graciously donated autographed copies of the first three novels in her Daughters of the Glen series to be put under this blog's Christmas tree. But of course everything put under this tree is up for grabs. In fact, I’ve got a little contest up my sleeve. One lucky winner will be drawn. How to win? Well, you’ve got to take a brief jaunt through cyberspace to  Melissa’s Book  page. Once there you’ll discover a blurb from the first book in the series titled Thirty Nights with a Highland Husband. In a comment at this blog you must answer the following: What is the most powerful magic of all?

Okay, I’d say it’s time to get to know Melissa a wee bit better...

SKY: Welcome, Melissa. Thanks so much for visiting!

MELISSA: Thanks for allowing me to come visit with your readers, Sky. I appreciate the invitation!

SKY: I’m familiar with your work and must say it’s spectacular. Before we dive too much into all you’ve accomplished I’d love to know a bit more about you. If you could pick one defined moment in your life that you knew you wanted to be a writer, what was it and why?

MELISSA: First off, thank you so much for that lovely compliment! I’m thrilled that you’re enjoying the series! I always wanted to be a writer… I just wasn’t impressed with how hard it was each time I started [and quit after just a few pages!]. I can tell you the exact moment I decided I was going to make it happen, though. I was in Scotland on vacation with my family. We’d hiked back into a place just north of Rosemarkie, called The Fairy Glen. I was relaxing after the hike into the glen [that translates as… I needed a rest after that long walk!]. Sitting there in the shade, beside a dark pool, listening to the waterfall pour down I realized that if I was ever going to make my dream come true, I had to take the first step and WRITE the book. I also realized that the very spot I was sitting in was going to be central to my story. I came home from that vacation and pounded out my first book, THIRTY NIGHTS WITH A HIGHLAND HUSBAND. And that’s how the Daughters of the Glen series – and my writing career! -- was born.

SKY: Scotland draws you. I can well understand that. If you could choose an area of Scotland you’ve yet to write of, always secretly wanted to…where would it be?

MELISSA: Interesting question… As the series has progressed, I’ve had my characters all over the country and even out onto the isles! So, in truth, I’ve pretty much covered whichever area tweaked my interest there, though my heart is always in the Highlands.

SKY: I can’t help myself; I want to dive right into your Daughters of the Glen series. What sparked the idea for this fabulous series?

MELISSA: From the moment I returned from vacation and sat down at the keyboard, I knew I was writing a time travel romance. I’ve loved reading romance for as long as I can remember. I’ve also loved fantasy. When I stumbled over my first time-travel, I was hooked. What could be better than combining fantasy and romance? Nothing! [Unless it’s fantasy, romance and a gorgeous Highlander!]

SKY: I couldn’t agreed more! *Blushing* In my book, there’s nothing better than a 13th century Highlander. Tell us more about Conner Mackiernan from Thirty Nights with a Highland Husband (Book I). If he were sitting in on this interview, what would he say about love? About Caitlyn Coryell?

MELISSA: Well, Sky, that’s going to depend on whether you’re asking Connor at the beginning of that book or now. THEN he didn’t believe in true love, especially not for him, and he didn’t trust any woman, anywhere, Cate included. But now? Now he knows for a fact True Love exists and he considers himself the luckiest man alive to have met his Soulmate – an absolute driving need for anyone of Faerie descent to be happy.

SKY: As you can tell, I’m all about crawling inside your character’s heads. Still talking about Thirty Nights with a Highland Husband, heroine Caitlyn Coryell is a 21st century woman. Wow! She sounds like a strong woman. Share a little bit about her. If she were sitting in on this interview what would she say about Conner?

MELISSA: I do like to think of Caitlyn as a strong woman… but that wasn’t always the case. Thirty Nights was all about Cate’s growth into the woman she could be. She’d be the first to tell you that Connor was the most arrogant, hard-headed, chauvinistic man on the face of the planet… just before she’d chuckle and confide that she’s tamed him now and he’s the best husband and father any woman could ask for.

SKY: Sarah Douglass, heroine of Highland Guardian (Book II), is a 30 something novelist. She’s in Scotland for a three month visit trying to recapture her ‘muse.’ If she could share three words with us about her current circumstances, what would they be? Why?

MELISSA: Beginning of the book? Blocked, frustrated, frightened. Now? Happy, happy, ecstatically happy. Okay, that’s four words. But they fit. Sarah, too had to accept who and what she was. Once she learned to accept herself, then she found the inner strength to become the heroine she was meant to be.

SKY: Ian McCullough (half-mortal descendent of fairies and Guardian of mortals and portals leading to the Faerie realms) has his hands full. When assigned to protect Sarah, he’s taken on more than he bargained for. If he could say three words that defined the way he felt when he first laid eyes on Sarah, what would they be? Why?

MELISSA: skeptical, intrigued, attracted.

SKY: Let’s chat about Soul of a Highlander (Book III). Mairi MacKiernan sounds like my kind of girl. Why? It strikes me she has to be stronger than most women (half faerie or not) should ever have to be. I think a lot of us can relate to characters like that. Tossed from the 13th century into the 21st century, she’s made due. Now she’s thrust back to the 13th century once again at her own request to save another then imprisoned by her enemy! I already label her a heroine by pure design. I’d like to crawl inside her head? Is she bitter? Does she have regrets? Would she change any of these happenstances if she could? Why?

MELISSA: She has tons of regrets and she’s absolutely filled with fear. But she’s also one of the most intensely stubborn characters I’ve written, so, like all my heroines, she has to learn to love herself and be the woman she was meant to be. Her biggest regret about leaving her own century is her fear that she’ll never find her one true love – because in her century, her fate was to die. But since she’s living in a time not her own, she can’t conceive of finding The One there. Like Cate and Sarah, Mairi has learn to move beyond her fears to find her own happiness.

SKY: Ramos Sevans, hero from Soul of a Highlander, has a mission. Tell us more. If Ramos was here, what would he say about his mission? What would he say about Mairi?

MELISSA: Talk about regrets! Ramos is a character with major, major regrets and an overwhelming need to make up for all the damage he feels he was responsible for in his past. He also has to come to terms with his relationship with his father – a truly evil Fae. Ramos’ whole life is guilt – should have, could have, would have. When he meets Mairi, he’s determined to save her [and the world!] at any cost…even if it means giving up his own life.
